NEWARK, Del. – In what was a complete dogfight wire-to-wire Sunday afternoon, No. 1 Connecticut came out on top with the 1-0 overtime victory against No. 5 Delaware at a hot and steamy Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

 

The two teams held the 0-0 tie for nearly 82 minutes before Huskies All-American Charlotte Veitner put in the game-winner with 3:05 remaining in overtime.

 

The loss marked the second straight in overtime for the Blue Hens (6-3) as Delaware fell to No. 20 Albany, 3-2, in extra minutes Friday evening.

 

Junior All-American Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany) posted three shots for Delaware while freshman Lotte de Koning (Vreeland, The Netherlands) tallied two.

 

Senior goalie Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands) collected five saves to move to seventh in program history with 254 career stops.

Senior Kayla Devlin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior Kiki Bink (Wageningen, The Netherlands) each registered a defensive save against UConn.

 

Nina Klein also recorded five saves for the Huskies.

“I compliment our players group for the way they came back from their performance against Albany on Friday. Even though we didn't get what we wanted today, I shared with them that it was a very well-played game. It showed us our character and our desire to get back at it. I think throughout the game we had gotten better. We didn't finish a few of the opportunities earlier on that would have made the difference, but we have learned from it and I'm sure we'll face a team like Connecticut again at the end of the season and at that time we should be better than we are today.”

 

     ·     UConn outshot Delaware, 15-7, and also held the 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.

     ·     In their last matchup against the No. 1 team in the country, the Hens took No. 1 Duke to overtime during the 2016 NCAA Tournament and came out victorious, 3-2.

     ·     The Blue Hens were held scoreless for the first time since 2014, which ended a stretch of 58 games with a goal.
