Interview and Giveaway with Anna Wolfe

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

The latest release is Liar's Game, the fifth book in the "One Rises" series.  Our main characters, who initially started the series out together, have been pulled apart by various events. This book definitely took me longer to write than the previous four because of how disparate the characters' plotlines are.  At the same time, I really did need to separate them and give each some space to develop on their own.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Directly?  No.  Indirectly?  Of course.  Clearly, I have had not actual experience with demons or possession.  But most of the characters borrow qualities and quirks from people I know.  It's also easier to describe places in a compelling way if you have at least laid eyes on the general location.  Sometimes, I use the Internet and do my best, but I've been to many of the cities where the books take place (e.g. Chicago, New York, San Francisco).

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Writing fiction is both my hobby and my guilty pleasure.  I do other stuff with my time for fun: cooking with my partner, listening to music, cuddling with my cats, hiking, and traveling.  But letting myself imagine and dream and write is something I do even when I don't really have time for it.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Fantasy, for sure.  I have little bits and pieces of story rising to the surface that would be fantasy, though I'm resisting the urge to start writing it.  Starting a story is always easier than finishing it and I'm committed to the "One Rises" series.  Instead, I'm jotting notes and descriptions to help me remember later.  The very first bit of this story emerged more than a decade ago; it can wait a little longer.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

This is part of a series and the next book (#6) is entitled Solid as the Wind.  Most of the series has been building up to a big event (the Meeting of the Conclave) and this is finally going to happen in Book 6.  The book plot is a bit of a mess at the moment.  I know where I'm starting and I know where I'm ending but how to get from A to Z is still a little fuzzy.  Right now, I'm just writing as inspiration strikes.  I will say that I wrote some of the sex scenes for Book 6 as I was writing the first book in the series.

What book are you reading now?

Sadly, not much in the way of reading for me right now.  I get some fiction reading in over winter break, but during the academic year (September to May), I read a lot less fiction than I would like.

What is in your to read pile?

I've had my eye on Elizabeth Bear's New Amsterdam series for a while.  I keep hesitating to start it because if it's good, I'm not going to be able to put the books in the series down and I'm kinda swamped at the moment.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

I almost didn't answer this question because it feels disloyal, but Silas is my favorite character to write.  He's the one who requires me to engage my imagination the most.  What would it be like to be born in the early 1600's and live through the next four hundred odd years?  Writing his character also pushed me to think about what the demonridden were like rather than falling into the trap of just making them evil and without nuance.

About the Author:

Anna Wolfe is a college professor by day and a novelist by night.  In fact, writing urban fantasy is the only reason she is still (mostly) sane post-dissertation.  When she isn't writing, teaching, or dicking around on the Internet, she is probably cooking with her husband or watching trashy television.
