Aberdeen City Council has been given the green light to increase its fleet of hydrogen-powered buses by another 10 to 25.
Under the Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) funded programme the Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe (JIVE) project, Aberdeen City Council purchased and is in the process of deploying 15 hydrogen buses in Aberdeen, Scotland in partnership with First Group, as part of a wider procurement of 145 hydrogen buses across Europe.
An additional £1m of funding has now become available through the JIVE project, and the council’s Strategic Commissioning Committee on Thursday approved plans to increase the number of hydrogen buses to 25.
Council chiefs said the extra buses will raise demand for hydrogen in the region and will allow a commercial supplier to enter the market as part of the delivery of a ‘hydrogen hub’.
