REPORT: Broncos will give franchise tag to Von Miller

After a 2015 season in which Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller racked up 11 sacks and forced four fumbles, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted Sunday Denver will apply the franchise tag to Miller, and attempt to work out a long term deal with the star pass rusher. The franchise tag is expected to reach approximately $14.11 million for the 2016 season. That amount is fully guaranteed once a player is on the game day roster for Week 1.

Miller, 25, had 2.5 sacks and scores of pressure on Tom Brady during Denver’s AFC Championship win over the Patriots. He’s set to hit free agency in March.

The Broncos also face the risk of quarterback Brock Osweiler hitting free agency. The fourth-year signal caller replaced Peyton Manning over a stretch of the 2015 season, but was replaced in Week 17. The Broncos defeated the Chargers in that game after Manning entered the game in relief, then defeated the Steelers and Patriots, setting up a Super Bowl 50 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

Considering Osweiler had modest performances (170-of-275, 1,967 yards, 10 touchdowns, six interceptions) in his appearances this year — the first of his career — he shouldn’t expect to draw huge interest on the market. That isn’t to suggest the Broncos don’t want to bring him back. The notion of tagging Miller really only suggests they’re going to be able to come up with a long-term deal with Osweiler, who’s expected to be the team’s full-time starter in 2016.

Rumors have circulated that Super Bowl 50 is Manning’s final game, win, lose or draw. Considering his injuries this year, as well as his relatively poor season, Osweiler appears to be the team’s best option.

They just have to get him signed.
