For the Denver Broncos, it was a near perfect start to Super Bowl 50.

The Carolina Panthers won the toss and kicked off to the Broncos, who marched down the field before their drive fizzled out and they settled for a 34-yard field goal by Brandon McManus. 3-0, Denver.

Then, Cam Newton and the Panthers’ offense started with the ball deep in their own territory, where Von Miller rushed, sacked and stripped Newton of the football for a fumble-six. 10-0, Broncos. That’s how the first quarter ended.

Early in the second quarter, Newton and the Carolina offense found the end zone, helped by two personal foul penalties by Aqib Talib, when Jonathan Stewart jumped over the line for a touchdown. 10-7, Denver, with 11:28 left in the half.

The two teams exchanged punts before the Broncos’ Justin Norwood returned the longest punt in Super Bowl history, 61 yards to the Panthers 14. The Broncos had to settle for another field goal, though, and led 13-7 with 7:01 to go before halftime.

Carolina fumbled and Manning threw an interception, neither of which resulted in points.

After starting hot, the Broncos had to punt four times, Manning threw an interception and they kicked a field goal. The offense fell asleep. Luckily, Denver’s defense was alive in every aspect. At halftime, the Broncos led 13-7.
