SAG Awards 2017: See the Complete Winners List

Shocking wins for Hidden Figures and Denzel Washington closed out the Screen Actors Guild Awards, a night filled with passion and politics.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are sometimes dismissed as just another stop on the long road to the Oscars—but Sunday night’s ceremony was anything but business as usual.

Though the evening crowned a few widely predicted victors—Emma Stone, Viola Davis, two cast members from. . . The Crown—a trio of unexpected winners stole the show near the end of the slightly over-long broadcast. Though Claire Foy and John Lithgow both won individual statuettes for their work on Netflix’s splashy Queen Elizabeth epic, another Netflix show ended up winning the prize for best drama series: Stranger Things, the streaming service’s nostalgia-soaked summer hit.

It was the final two film categories, though, that really caused a stir in the Shrine Auditorium. First, longtime SAG bridesmaid Denzel Washington—who previously held a record as the most-nominated actor who had never actually won a SAG Award—finally scored a best actor statuette for his powerful work in Fences, a film Washington also directed. Washington won over a pool including Casey Affleck, whose performance in Manchester by the Sea has already won an entire shelf’s worth of awards in recent months. Affleck seemed a shoo-in for best actor at the upcoming Oscars—but Washington’s win indicates that his victory may not be as set as it seemed.

Manchester by the Sea was also shut out of the night’s answer to best picture—outstanding cast in a motion picture—as was Moonlight, another film that seemed certain to clean up at awards season. Instead, the prize went to crowd-pleasing historical drama Hidden Figures—a late entry to the season that has been steadily gaining momentum, as well as box office dollars. Could its win Sunday night, capped by Taraji P. Henson’s forceful speech, portend a bigger take at the Oscars?
