Super Bowl City Setup Now Underway; Street Closures In PlacePhotos: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

Work has begun on construction of the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee's Super Bowl City at the foot of Market Street, Justin Herman Plaza and Sue Bierman Park, as expected. Traffic and transit backups and delays are anticipated today through Feb. 12th, throughout the city.

Your best resource for route and re-routing information—which includes walking and cycling as well as public transit and driving—is the SFMTA's Getting Around During Super Bowl page. It includes links, maps of detours, updates as changes are made, and this handy guide you can print out. You can also follow its Twitter account and sign up for emails for immediate alerts. The city also posted a Super Bowl 50 page

Work is in full swing at Justin Herman Plaza to build Super Bowl City.

Don't miss this map of entrances/exits and attractions at Super Bowl City. It includes everything from medical stations to television network broadcast centers (can you say "photo bomb"?) to all of the activities, which are free and open to the public.

Just remember, you'll be required to stand in line and enter through security checkpoints, which will include body scanners and bag checks. Volunteers will be on hand to help.

Volunteer groups met this morning in Sue Bierman Park and Justin Herman Plaza.

Sue Bierman Park will be the site of the City Stage for larger concerts—35 in all from Jan. 30th through Feb. 7th. Headliners include Grammy-winning artist Alicia Keys, OneRepublic, The Band Perry, Matt Nathanson and Chris Isaak; see the Event Calendar for more.

Justin Herman Plaza is preparing to become the Fan Energy Zone.

Justin Herman Plaza was barricaded off as of Friday, and this morning, work was in full force to build the Fan Energy Zone. That'll include a 40-foot tall Fan Dome with interactive games; a 50-by-15-foot Fan Wall for social media feeds, live video and more; and the Fan Stage, "a presentation space for community partners, celebrity appearances and autograph signings, and the main space for the DJs and MCs," according to the event's website.

Justin Herman Plaza was barricaded as of Friday.

The Embarcadero southbound from Washington Street to Don Chee Way, as promised, has been shut to traffic (including bicycles). Vehicles are being diverted onto Washington Street, so expect backups and delays. Market Street is also closed from Davis/Beale to the Embarcadero, and Steuart Street is closed from Market Street to Don Chee Way.

The Embarcadero southbound is closed at Washington Street.

Traffic from the Embarcadero is being rerouted onto Washington Street.

BART riders, don't despair: four of the five Embarcadero BART/Muni stations are outside of the security perimeter (only the entrance near Spear and Market streets will be within the fence), so you'll have access. And even that entrance will be open from 6:45–9:45am weekdays Feb. 1st–5th. For more on that, see BART's Super Bowl week playbook.

Meanwhile, the NFL Experience at Moscone Center, a ticketed event, is causing closures, too. At Moscone, vehicle traffic will be prohibited on Howard Street between Third and Fourth streets, as well as some lanes between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Finally, if you have any questions during Super Bowl City, the host committee has posted a community hotline number, as promised: (415) 735-6927. It's being checked intermittently right now and messages are returned, but we're told it'll be staffed full-time from 9am until an hour after Super Bowl City closing time from Jan. 30th–Feb. 7th.
