SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A group of protesters surrounded the Roundhouse on Monday, speaking out against the Republican and governor backed bill to fix the driver’s license problem.
Opponents say it would take licenses away from 90,000 immigrants and replace them with a driving permit.
It also sends personal information to the feds, which is not required by the REAL ID act.
One woman drove all the way from Roswell to fight the measure.
“We know the governor is lying. We know that there is a solution that gets New Mexico in compliance with REAL ID without punishing immigrant families,” said Marina Piña.
A governor’s spokesperson said in part “She is going to continue to stand with the overwhelming majority of New Mexicans, including Hispanics, who want to end the dangerous law of giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.”
The measure is now heading to the house judiciary committee. If it passes, it will then go to the full house for a vote.
