Report: Watchmen is getting an animated, R-rated movie adaptation

Warner Bros. is reportedly looking into adapting Alan Moore’s beloved graphic novel Watchmen at least one more time.

Comic Book Resources is reporting that Warner Bros. sent out a survey to members of its A-List community program to get their opinion on an animated film already in development based on Watchmen. The studio, according to the screenshot of the survey, is attempting to secure an R rating.

Watchmen was originally published between 1986 and 1987. The story follows a group of vigilante heroes and the socio-political crisis of a world on the verge of an apocalypse. Moore has said before that he used Watchmen as a way of deconstructing and parodying the concept of what a superhero was. Watchmen is one of the only graphic novels to be considered one of the greatest novels of all time by critics and has been described by the BBC as the “moment comic books grew up.”

This isn’t the first time that Watchmen has been adapted. Warner Bros. and Justice League director Zack Snyder teamed up in 2009 for a live-action adaptation of Moore’s source material. It was one of the first movies Snyder did with Warner Bros. and reaction to the film was mixed. Moore has said before that he hasn’t liked any of the adaptations that have been made based on his works, including V for Vendetta and Snyder’s Watchmen.

There’s no word on who will be handling the animated film, if it is in production. Polygon has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment on the story and will update when more information becomes available.
