Fire-Safety Webinar from the FPA: The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

What is The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and what does it mean for your business?

That was the subject of a recent webinar from FIREX International, which took place at 2pm on 27 January. You can view the webinar here.

Those responsible for workplaces and other buildings to which the public have access can avoid fires by taking responsibility for and adopting the right behaviours and procedures. The RRO (fire safety) 2005 sets out your legal obligations as a business owner or ‘responsible person’ under the legislation. Failure to comply with the mandates within the order could lead to a long prison sentence and/or heavy fine.

John Briggs of the Fire Protection Association presented the webinar, showing you what the RRO 2005 means to you and your business.

Who is John Briggs?

John Briggs is responsible for training and operations at the FPA [Fire Protection Association] based at the Fire College in Moreton in Marsh.

After leaving university with a BSc John joined the Army and was commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Artillery, where he stayed for some 12 years of service which included postings to Germany, Oman, Canada, Northern Ireland and the UK.  As well as a great many military courses John  completed his Unit Fire Officers Course, and was responsible at a number of military bases for fire prevention.

John left the army and worked in Virginia in the USA where he was part of the town volunteer fire service.  John was at this time responsible for managing a private 2,500 acre estate on the james river.

On returning to the UK John completed an MBA  at the University of Surrey and was for a number of years responsible for all contracted fire and security provision at the Ford Motor Company in the UK.

After a short spell at the BBC in London, John continued managing fire, security and training in a large FM company and then moved to more senior roles in the same company where he had a number of FM divisional director and sales positions, one of which was in the UAE.   On his return to the UK John took up the post of  sales and marketing director and later MD of the main security company.

John left the world of FM and security and returned to fire protection with his role at the FPA.
