The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority are preparing to submit their outline business case for the Mersey Tidal Power project
A team led by Arup including marine consultants ABPmer and planning specialists BECG are developing the outline business case for the project, after receiving funding to carry out early investigation work last year.
The completed 1GW project would be capable of generating enough energy for a million homes, or four times the power of all the wind turbines off the coast of Liverpool, which generate 270MW in total.
Liverpool city region metro mayor Steve Rotheram is championing the project and claims it could add thousands of jobs to the region for designers, architects, technicians and construction workers.
“The unique geography of the River Mersey and Liverpool Bay makes us one of the only places in the UK with the potential to generate plentiful, predictable, green tidal electricity,” Rotheram said.
“Making this project a reality would create thousands of jobs for local people in the city region and that’s why we’re moving forward to the next stage, which is creating an outline business case to demonstrate the viability of a tidal power project.”
The final business case will provide the Combined Authority with a detailed and robust technical, financial and environmental evaluation of the viability of a Mersey Tidal Power project, to consider progressing to the next stage, and is expected to be completed in the next 12 months.
