Six of the Best: Tented Camps

Six of the Best: Tented Camps

Camping: one of the most divisive words in the travel lexicon. So often associated with cramped tents, dodgy Trangias and the vague whiff of wet dog. The irony is that some of the most luxurious and unique hotels in the world are tented camps; think large canopies, quirky furniture, spacious rooms and, most importantly, excellent service. So in the interest of myth-busting we've canvassed (see what we did there?) the Original Travel experts and come up with six of our very favourite tented camps around the world...

Desert Nights Camp, Oman

Oman can be split nicely into three categories: coastline, mountains and desert. And as far as that last one goes, you can't get much better than Desert Nights Camp. Located in the vast expanse that is Wahiba Sands, it's all vast skies and isolated bliss. The term 'getting away from it all' springs to mind.

Garden Village, Slovenia

Slovenia is very much a destination to watch in 2016 and there are few more photogenic places in Europe than the magnificent Lake Bled (you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd somehow ended up in Canada or New Zealand). Think looming mountains, sprawling forests and still waters - all enjoyed from the comfort of the uber-chic eco-glamping resort, Garden Village.

Shergarh, India

Step into your very own Jungle Book and explore the amazing wildlife in Central India, including the majestic (and sadly endangered) tiger. All while staying at the exclusive Shergarh, which features just nine bedroom tents and offers an extremely personalised service.

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, Canada

A former mining outpost, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is both luxurious and eco-conscious. It also just so happens to be located in one of the best intact examples of temperate rainforest on earth. Quite the holiday CV, then. It gets better; the resort's Cloud Camp offers guests the chance to travel by helicopter and camp by a remote mountain lake.

Serian Serengeti, Tanzania

The Serengeti is a truly magical spot for a safari, with a quite remarkable concentration and diversity of wildlife. The sensational Serian Serengeti moves with the wildebeest migration and the camp itself is all Persian rugs, painted wardrobes and huge mirrors.

Four Seasons Tented Camp, Thailand

We've arguably saved the best until last with the Four Seasons Tented Camp in Thailand. Set amongst the bamboo forests of northern Thailand, its 15 spacious tents overlook the Ruak River and are well spaced out to allow guests privacy. Think large decks, copper-hammered bathtubs and beautiful views.
