The WSU Greek community is participating in National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) to ensure chapters and the community are aware of hazing and the issues caused by it.

According to Stop Hazing, a national hazing education program, about 73 percent of students who participate in fraternities, sororities or sports experience some form of hazing.

Over the past few years, hazing has also been an issue at WSU. Phi Kappa Tau and Pi Kappa Alpha were recently reinstated after losing recognition due to hazing and underage drinking allegations in 2012 and 2014.

According to the Washington student code, universities must have a no-tolerance policy for hazing. This means that any student groups found guilty of hazing will lose recognition from the university. If a university fails to derecognize these organizations, it is in violation of state laws.

A large portion of NHPW is programming that will be held in the CUB Auditorium from 7 – 8 p.m. Wednesday. Kim Novak, an advocate for campus safety, will host the programming. It will include hazing prevention, student risk management and student organization development.

Bryn Lloyd-Davies, vice president of Panhellenic New Member Services, is one of the officers responsible for organizing NHPW.

“It’s definitely important to the WSU community because it helps us keep giving resources to chapters,” Lloyd-Davies said.

There will be an awareness tabling event called “These hands don’t haze.” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today on the Glenn Terrell Friendship Mall. This is a chance to pledge commitment to anti-hazing, Lloyd-Davies said.
