5 items to add to your 2019 home decor shopping list

Upgrade your space with these trendy decor items we're seeing everywhere this year.

If you’re looking to give your home a facelift in 2019, there are some trending items you'll want to add to the top of your shopping list.

We spoke with Karin Bennett, owner of Karin Bennett Designs, to chat decor trends and get the lowdown on the hottest pieces for 2019.

1. Curvy furniture

For the past few years, we’ve seen boxy, rectangular furniture, but in 2019, that’s all changing. “Instead of a rectangular coffee table [or angular couch], we’re going to be seeing a more organic shape,” says Karin. If you’ve already hopped on the mid-century modern aesthetic and have invested in furniture with sleek curves, you’re already a step ahead. But, if not, look for items like a curved velvet sofa or opt for a rounded dining table to balance out some of the right angles in your space.

2. Turkish rugs

“Another thing that is becoming very popular is the Turkish rug—you’re going to see it everywhere,” says Karin. Ranging from more ornate ones with vibrant colours to more minimalist options with monochromatic designs, there's sure to be a style that speaks to you and your specific decor style. “If the landscape in your home is very neutral, you can pick just about any colour,” says Karin. “But if you have a certain colour scheme in your home, such as blue, choose one that has at least a bit of blue in it to complement the surrounding palette.”

3. Highly saturated pillows

Throw pillows are an easy and inexpensive way to switch up the decor in your space without doing a huge overhaul. “For a while, we were all doing patterned pillows — which still look great — but now we’re seeing larger, more heavily saturated pillows,” says Karin. Look for pillows and pillowcases in heavy fabrics and saturated colours, such as plum, eggplant and coral (Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year!) to also stay in line with the shift towards a warmer palette.

4. Real plants

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to grow your green thumb, now is the chance because real plants as décor accents aren’t going anywhere fast. “People are becoming more health-conscious, and we know that there is a benefit to having real plants in your home,” says Karin. If you’re looking for something low-maintenance, she recommends the ZZ plant, which doesn’t need a lot of light, water or attention. If you’re a newbie to the world of plant care, this is a great way to ease yourself in.

5. Round mirrors

Like rounded furniture, round mirrors are rapidly becoming a trendy decor accent. “Round mirrors offer a really great juxtaposition to the square lines we find in our homes,” says Karin. If you’re looking to integrate organic shapes into your space on a budget, round mirrors can be an inexpensive option. Karin recommends looking for ones that don’t have a wide frame, but rather something that’s understated and simple and can be hung above an entry console table or workspace desk for visual interest.
