Tom and Jerry Creator Gene Deitch Dies At Age 95

Gene Deitch, Oscar-winning illustrator has sadly passed away. He died on Thursday, 16th April 2020, at the age of 95.

 

Reports reveal that he died at his apartment in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic.

 

According to his Czech publisher, Petr Himmel, who made the disclosure, Deitch died unexpectedly.

 

Deitch was born in Chicago on 8th August 1924. His full name was Eugene Merrill Deitch. He is known for directing some of the most popular animation cartoons.

These cartoons include Popeye the Sailor Man, Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik. Gene Deitch also directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry.

 

Deitch’s time with the popular “Tom and Jerry” franchise began in 1961 when American production company MGM commissioned Deitch to produce 13 shorts of the animation in Prague under Rembrandt Films animation studios. Deitch wrote and directed the cartoon up until 1962.

Deitch’s animated short film (Munro) won the Best Animated Short Film Oscar in 1961, the first of its kind created outside the United States to win the Stellar award.

 

He was also critically acclaimed for directing animated feature Alice of Wonderland In Paris, which won him the Winsor McCay Award in 2003 for his contribution to the animation.

 

Gene is survived by his estranged wife and three sons who are all animators.
