MOUNT GREENWOOD — Peppa Pig gave birth to a dozen piglets Monday at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in Mount Greenwood.

Seven of the baby pigs survived the birthing, though one was accidentally crushed by the mother Wednesday night, according to parent volunteer Raj Ali of Roseland.

"It happens. It was so sad," Ali said. His daughter, Nylah, is a freshman at the school at 3857 W. 111th St. on the Far Southwest Side.

Principal William Hook said the school annually purchases an expectant sow. Often, these females are at the end of their farrowing cycle.

This is Peppa's eighth litter. Hook said sows often lose more piglets as they age.

The students named Peppa for the animated character from the preschool television series. The piglets have yet to be named, Ali said.

Check out these photos of the newborns snuggling up under a heat lamp Thursday morning.
