Dr. Newman also oversees FIU Global, which centralizes the university’s global initiatives in regards to planning, facilitating, coordinating and initiating partnerships with international institutions and organizations. Dr. Newman is recognized as one of the leading experts in the field of public management and the emotive aspects of work. We want to warmly thank both Drs. Denhardt and Newman for the important role they have played in ASPA over the years and in public administration as a discipline.

  • Joe Wallis, from Microsoft, will join the Public-Private Partnerships panel taking place Saturday, March 19, at 3:45 p.m.
  • Sec. Rita Landgraf, Secretary of Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services, will join the Trust and Perception of Government panel taking place Sunday, March 20, at 1:30 p.m.

We are looking forward to the knowledge and expertise these speakers will add to the important subjects on which ASPA president Maria Aristigueta has chosen to focus during her panels.

This year’s Super Panels have been formed specifically to bring light to this year’s conference theme, New Traditions in Public Administration: Reflecting on Challenges, Harnessing Opportunities. Each topic will look deeply into a current challenge or opportunity within public administration and many of these discussions will inform the ongoing dialogue surrounding the joint ASPA-NAPA Advising Leaders project. This project will create papers to help inform the Presidential transition in the United States in 2017.

SWPA Holds Pre-Conference Workshop on Tools for Women

The Section for Women in Public Administration (SWPA) will hold a half-day workshop on Friday, March 18, titled Conflict Management and Collaborative Negotiation: Power Tools for Women. Moderated by Kathy Murphy (University of Delaware) and presented by Suzanne Discenza (Park University) and Galia Cohen (University of Texas at Dallas), this event will help attendees explore conflict and learn how to manage it.

Navigating conflict is tricky. For most people, conflict produces negative thoughts and feelings that can impede our capacity to manage it successfully. Left unresolved, it causes stress, damages relationships and destroys trust. But conflict is also a natural and inevitable part of life and with the right tools, it can become an opportunity for positive change and personal growth.

This workshop will build on the concepts of collaborative negotiation developed by Roger Fisher and William Ury (the authors of Getting to Yes) at the Harvard Program on Negotiation. During this experiential and interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Explore personal perceptions of conflict
  • Recognize personal strengths and weaknesses concerning conflict
  • Learn five approaches for managing conflict
  • Discover the essential elements of assertive speaking and purposeful listening
  • Gain awareness of collaborative negotiation techniques
  • Appreciate the diversity and complexity of purposeful conflict management
Make plans now to attend this workshop and improve your conflict management skills: Friday, March 18, at 1 p.m.
