Registration is open for the 12th Annual Burkhart Walk for Autism Awareness scheduled for April 30 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Students and community members are invited to show their support for Autism Awareness.
The event scheduled for 2-4 p.m., and organized by the Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research, is free to the public. Participants may register as individuals or teams.
“The Autism Walk is important to the Lubbock community because it raises awareness for all families of people on the autism spectrum,” said Janice Magness, director for the Burkhart Transition Academy. “We would like to thank the whole Lubbock community for all the support given to the annual Walk for Autism Awareness. The walk grows every year!”
Burkhart Enterprises, KLBK-TV, KAMC-TV, the Blue Star Foundation, the S.S. Foundation and JP’s Fundwear are the lead sponsors for the walk. Friends and Partners of the event include Prosperity Bank, High Point Village, UMC Heath System and more.

The Burkhart Center is part of the Texas Tech College of Education and is the premier center in Lubbock for helping people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. The center offers a variety of services, including education for teachers, research opportunities and events and resources for those affected by ASD.
The center’s flagship program, the Transition Academy is home to 15 local students with ASD. The students learn valuable job and life skills. Many students have jobs through partnerships between the Transition Academy, Texas Tech and community organizations.
