Securis Partners to Expand Training for Disabled HS Students

The Chantilly data destruction and recycling company Securis is expanding its partnership with ServiceSource Inc. to increase employment and training services for area disabled high school students.

Securis provides secure data disposal services for private and public sector companies and government entities, while ServiceSource is a leading nonprofit for individuals with disabilities. ServiceSource has been providing job training for the disabled in Northern Virginia for over 40 years, and Securis has been providing real-life work experience to disabled students at Chantilly High School.

Such work includes ultra-secure electronics recycling, auditing, hard drive shredding and other data destruction services for PCs, laptops, mobile phones, servers, monitors, copiers, printers and other data storage devices and electronics waste.

To date the partnership has not only been a great success for individual but also for the customers, says Jeremy Farber, owner and president of Securis.

“Our work with Chantilly High School students with disabilities gave us the experience and confidence to expand the program and help ServiceSource achieve its mission of encouraging more inclusive communities through services and partnerships to support people with disabilities, their families, their caregivers and community members,” he says.

“E-waste recycling and electronics disassembly has proven to be a rewarding career for people with disabilities. We’re excited to grow the program further.”

Ken Crum, Senior Vice President/Regional Executive Director for ServiceSource Virginia is also enthusiastic about the partnership.

“ServiceSource is continually looking for integrated work settings for our employees. Securis’ dedication to hiring a diverse workforce with competitive wages made for a seamless transition between programs. We look forward to continue growing this partnership in the future.”

According to Sergey “Lex” Schmitt, who graduated from Chantilly High School last June, the program provided invaluable training for a career on the field.

“It was hard at first because I did not know how to use the tools,” he says. “I learned how to take apart computers and became good at it. I like the people who helped me learn this trade.

His parents say he gained confidence working at Securis, and they thanked the Chantilly High School teachers and the staff at Securis for giving their son the opportunity.

Sue Collins, a Career and Transition Teacher at the public high school, explains how the program works. “Students go to the company’s nearby facility anywhere from four to five times a week, usually accompanied by a teacher. They learn work skills, life skills, and social skills. They get respect, dignity and joy, and self-worth – It builds up their self-confidence."

Securis has been proactive in designing work environments and tasks that are appropriate for each student, and is dedicated to hiring employees with disabilities, says

Founder and President Jeremy Farber.

“This is a great way to participate in the local community and help kids. We have provided training and work experience for over 100 students with disabilities to date, and some students have become full-time employees after graduation.”
