Aaron Fotheringham, Eliud Kipchoge and Ederson all set records in 2018

There have been some incredible sporting achievements in 2018 with a flurry of new records set.

Manchester City have re-written records in the Premier League, Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira rode the Largest wave surfed (unlimited) - female at 68 ft and there were a whole host of fantastic achievements during February's Winter Olympics.

In this round-up though, we’ll mostly focus on the Guinness World Records titles achieved away from the professional sporting fixtures and events, but still required a great deal of skill and effort to accomplish.

Longest football drop kick

Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has been a valuable asset to Manchester City since he joined in 2017, with passing regarded as one of his key skills.

So in May, after City had been crowned Premier League champions, the 25-year-old had a go at the Guinness World Records title for Longest football drop kick.

To achieve this Ederson had to beat 75 m. And on his third and final attempt he did just that, with a distance of 75.35 m (247 ft 2 in).

Farthest wheelchair ramp jump

Aaron Fotheringham (US) is not a man who shies away from a challenge.

So when he had the opportunity to attempt three record titles in celebration of Guinness World Records Day, he went for it.

The wheelchair motocross (WCMX) athlete set new records for the the Tallest quarter pipe drop-in on a wheelchair, Highest wheelchair hand plant (both 8.40 m/27 ft 6.7 in) and the Farthest wheelchair ramp jump during which he flew 21.35 m (70 ft 0.5 in) through the air.

Aaron was born with spinal bifida but his disability has not stopped him from chasing his dreams. It’s just given him “a different set of wheels to try and make it happen”.

Maurice during run up 2

Longest bowling run-up

Nine-year-old Maurice Griffin ran more than two miles to enter the record books in June.

The cricket fan from Leeds, UK, ran 3.767 km (2.341 miles) in the Longest bowling run-up during his match for Adel Cricket Club under 11s, taking 26 minutes 55 seconds to complete his record-breaking journey.

Maurice and his dad organised the attempt in partnership with UK charity Chance To Shine, which helps spread the power of cricket to schools and disadvantaged communities.

Greatest height from which a basketball is shot by How Rididculous

Greatest height from which a basketball is shot

Australian YouTube stars How Ridiculous love the Greatest height from which a basketball is shot record title.

After member Kyle Nebel set the first record in 2011 with 66.89 m (219 ft 5 in), the height has just gone up and up.

But even by How Ridiculous’ standards, they’ve achieved a – well, quite ridiculous – height of 201.422 m (660 ft 10 in).

Star Derek Herron scored the record-breaking basket when he threw the ball from the top of Maletsunyane Falls in Semonkong, Lesotho in January.

Eliud Kipchoge fastest marathon

Fastest marathon

An exception to the rules for this piece, but such a big achievement it would be wrong not to acknowledge it again.

Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge made history in September, setting a new world-record time for the Fastest marathon when he completed the BMW Berlin Marathon in just 2 hours 1 minute and 39 seconds.

His record-breaking time means the two-hour marathon is a tantalising 99 seconds away.
