NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipality to switch off geysers for stage 2 load-shedding

The Newcastle Municipality has confirmed it will be switching off geysers until Sunday.

Eskom has announced that it will implement stage 2 load-shedding from 12 noon today (Thursday, January 14).

This is expected to continue until Sunday, January 17 at 11pm.

In stage 2, the Newcastle Municipality has confirmed it will switch off geysers from 12 noon until 11pm each day in order to shed the required load.

“This is to ensure residents don’t experience electricity blackouts,” confirmed Mlungisi Khumalo, Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality.

In a statement released from Eskom on its social media platforms, the power utility stated the necessity of stage 2 load-shedding was due to ‘the loss of generation capacity overnight’.

“Load-shedding is also required to manage the use of the emergency reserves, which will help us contain the stage of load-shedding required. The system remains vulnerable and unpredictable, should any further breakdowns occur, the stage of load-shedding may change at short notice.”

According to information, two generation units at the Kusile Power Station tripped due to the ‘failure of the main coal feed conveyor belts supplying coal to the units’.

“In addition, a unit each at the Kriel and Duvha tripped due to unforeseen breakdowns.”

Eskom has urged the public to reduce electricity consumption to help it minimise load-shedding.
