Should this be a suspension for Melksham?

That was textbook use of the body didn’t push and he marked it, if he gets rubbed out for that I’m done won’t watch footy again, and the commentators were disgraceful

No youre not done. You will keep watching.

The AFL have said pushing players into dangerous positions in marking contests will be penalised. The umpire pinged him so now we wait to see if the MRO gives it a fine or a week.

I thought it was if you are out of the contest & it was illegal since you are shepherding / blocking anyway. Using your body to beat your opponent and marking the ball is the goal.

Too much going on to worry about everything around the contest otherwise they will have to make rules at hitting them at high speed too.

Its ridiculous the umpire paid a free kick against & commentators are even discussing it.

Laying a tackle and winning a free kick for HTB has still seen players get 3 weeks.

Why do you think this is different ?

It’s not a fine or a week, it’ll be severe contact.

So you’re happy for it to be 3 weeks?

Does Ginbey get anything for causing Petty to make contact?

HAS to be thrown out.

It’s not even a free kick.

You’re allowed to use your body to engage from behind, as long as you are in the motion of marking the ball.

It’s when you push or nudge & then let the ball go over the top that it’s a free.

Just shit luck for McGovern but that’s just how it is sometimes.

I at least see the merit in Curtis getting suspended. Even if I don’t agree. I accept the AFL doesn’t want arms pinned in a tackle.

But if they don’t want a hip to nudge a backside in a marking contest, what do they want? Melksham to attempt a screamer & put his knee into McGoverns head?

No. But that is the rule the AFL has adopted. And the Tribunal have been ordered to accept it.

I think pretty much everyone would prefer nuance and 1 or 2 weeks being accepted as well.

We saw Maynard lay a dangerous tackle last night, driving a Geelong player's head into the turf but he was fine so it wont even be looked at.

It is clear you are distressed and frightened at the prospect of facing Melksham next week; you fear the Milkman. And rightly so. That left boot is vicious.

Don't get your hopes up too high mate, he'll play next week and smash whatever passes for a defender at your club, Jiath or something?

He is so fearsome we will put one of our borderline VFL players on him...

Looks like neither McGovern nor Melksham are aware of Ginbey and Petty. I think Gov is playing for the free, hoping for hands in the back but good use of the body by Melksham.

Ultimately, unlucky that Petty is in the way, don't the think minor contact from Ginbey added much. Play on

I recon you are the only one saying it’s weeks since you are playing Melbourne next weekend.

The huge difference is if you are going for the mark you have eyes on the ball, you can’t see all the on coming traffic. The incidents we want stopped are when players are out of position, can’t mark the ball so shove their opponent into the pack so they are free to crumb.

He will get weeks.

The AFL argument will be that Melksham has a duty of care for McGovern and that by making contact from a vulnerable position he recklessly put McGovern in danger.

There were options for Melksham to contest the play without taking this reckless action and thus it's his responsibility.

Simple fact is if you cause an opponent to get a concussion, you're going to be in trouble.

Only a matter of time before it applies to teammates (ala Cameron & Rohan) and marking contests (ala Mitch Lewis on Ed Richards) as well.

Dumb rule leads to dumb consequences.

and because of the way they work these things out, guilty = 3 weeks, which makes it even dumber.

It SHOULD just be a free kick, maybe a week in the worst cases (or if the AFL is trying to look tough), but given the ones they've given already, and that Melbourne isn't a big club or contending this year, then going by the examples from earlier in the year, he's probably gone for 3.

Dumb.

Shouldn't be suspended for that, it's a contact sport FFS and nothing malicious in it, he made the moves to mark the ball, and succeeded

Trouble is two fold:

1. The inconsistence with just what is a push in the back and whats not, I am not sure what it is now on any given day.
2. Unfortunately punishments are now very much outcomes based, player gets concussion....suspension.

Personally I don't think he should be either fined OR suspended.

The game is getting more and more sanitised and a couple of its entertaining points of difference, have been compromised by the current administration, they have got rid of bump and now are clamping down on the tackle.

Progressing rapidly towards touch football.

The sooner Mama Kane and Sheriff Matt Dillion depart the better in my view.

Good outcome.
Common sense. Pay attention Will Schofield and Matthew Pavlich.
