Kontron and Beamr Enable 18 Live Channels of 10-bit 4K HEVC Video on a Single 2U Platform

IBC2017 demonstration will include a Beamr powered integrated hardware and software solution for high density 4K HDR HEVC live video encoding for OTT streaming video

Montreal, Canada, September 12, 2017 – Kontron, a global provider of cloud and carrier-class integrated infrastructure platforms, and Beamr Imaging Ltd., a world leader in content-adaptive video encoding and optimization solutions, today announced a new collaborative solution using the Beamr 5 HEVC software encoder to achieve real-time 4K 10-bit HDR on bare metal Kontron SYMKLOUD platforms. This solution breaks all new ground for density, cost and performance, and may be viewed during the IBC show in Amsterdam at the Kontron booth J20 (Hall 14), on September 15 – 19, 2017.

Beamr 5 provides up to a 50% reduction in bitrate over H.264 encoders and enables service providers, OTT distributors, MSOs, satellite operators, and content distribution network providers to support 4K video distribution with 10-bit high-dynamic range (HDR) support that is compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. As more UHD HDR content is produced, high-dynamic range has quickly become a requirement for today’s 4K and UHD televisions, revolutionizing the TV experience. HDR significantly broadens the spectrum of both contrast and color depth which ramps the amount of processing needed.

The Beamr 5 real-time HEVC software encoder runs on the high density 2U SYMKLOUD MS2910 converged infrastructure platform. With nine MSP8050 modular server nodes, each containing two independent Intel® Xeon® E3-1578L v5 processors with Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics P580 graphics processor, a total of 18 processors are able to encode up to 18 simultaneous 4Kp30 10-bit HDR video channels. This never before seen performance makes the MS2910 especially attractive as TCO and operational costs may be reduced as much as 70% versus standard commodity servers.
