ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A long-time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of fiction.
Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and has been repeatedly guilt-tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries—not to mention an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. Wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

Where
are you from?
Originally born in the garlic
capital of the world, but I call Kodiak, Alaska home. I lived on that glorious
island for seven amazing years. That’s where I grew up. Where I became me.
Tell
us your latest news?
My current big news is The Stone Legacy
Series—a five-book young adult paranormal romance series based on Mayan
mythology. All five books will be
released by April 19th, 2016. Books 1-3 will be out by the end of January.
February has a release, and then another in April. So watch out because you
won’t have to wait a year to read it to the end. Right now the books are only
available on Amazon, but they will also be available on print everywhere.
When
and why did you begin writing?
My high school English teacher, Mr. Stewart. He
had a prostatic leg, which was fun when tapped his pencil on it.
In his class we read the Iliad and the Odyssey,
were my intro to mythology began. Later I applied for his journalism class, and
from there became the features reporter, and the next year, features editor.
After my first semester as an intern at a local
newspaper, I realized I hated journalism. Like—hated it. I just didn’t like writing what other people told me to.
I wanted to write what I thought was interesting, and I didn’t want such a
strict word count limit on what I wrote. That’s when I realized I wasn’t cut
out for writing news, and instead would write fiction.
When
did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I read an article—can’t
remember which one—that said, “If you love to write, you’re a writer. You have
something important to say. Something others want to hear. Don’t ever forget
that.” I had to believe that or I wouldn’t have made it through some of the
struggles I faced as a self-taught writer. And you know what they say: If you think you can, or you think you
can’t, you’re right.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
Colleen Houck’s Tiger series was
a great inspiration. I wrote my series after reading the first few books of
hers, where she used Indian mythology in the most magical way. When I finished
her book I remember hugging it to my chest and letting out a long, exasperated
sigh. Why did it have to be over so fast? Why can’t there be more? Why can’t I
write a story like this to make people swoon over the final page? Wait...I can.
Do
you have a specific writing style?
I love to write detail and visceral reactions.
I want to insert the reader into the scene and bring them along for the ride,
right along with my characters. Texture, the temperature of the air, and any
assault of their senses—I want my readers to feel every page.
How
did you come up with the title?
My publisher and I changed the
title of book one from Stone Guardian to Mayan Blood. We wanted to shed the
book’s old identity and highlight the Mesoamerican inspiration. It was a
collaborative effort, and I love it.
Is
there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Every book carries its own moral
or message.
Mayan
Blood
is very much about being brave, overcoming your inner fears, and embracing your
talents—however scary that may be.
Interlude is about loving
yourself, even when you have every reason not to.
Lights
of Aurora
is about following your heart and trusting your gut against all odds.
Anarchy is about
closing one chapter of your life and moving on to another. It’s about blazing a
new path. A new future.
Birthright is about
standing against the most impossible challenge to fight for a brighter, more
stable future. It’s about refusing to let go. It’s about closure.
How
much of the book is realistic?
I think a huge part of the series
is realistic. Besides the paranormal aspect—Mayan mythology, an enchanted
stone, various deities—the humanistic aspect of the characters are very real.
Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
No, but I think each of my
characters have aspects people can relate to.
What
book are you reading now?
I’m reading Miss Peregrine’s Home
for Peculiar Children. I haven’t gotten into it as much as I’d like because
I’ve been buried in edits, but so far it’s fantastic.
Are there any new authors that
have grasped your interest?
I am excited to read Savannah Blevins.
She has a new book coming out called Frog Hollow which I think will be
fantastic. I love reading witches and complicated stories.
What
are your current projects?
My current one is the final book
in The Stone Legacy Series—BIRTHRIGHT. I don’t have the blurb from my publisher
yet, but I can tell you it is full of more twists and turns than you’ll be able
to anticipate. Birthright releases in April, 2016.
