Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is essential if, as a coach, we want to develop. There are so many coaches and different coaching certificates that it can be challenging to decide where to go to receive quality executive coaching. But, most importantly, where do coaches go to develop further? I think it is essential to understand what a good supervisor can do for you as a coach. The main point of this blog is for coaches to recognise why they need supervision and for people who are seeking coaching to check to see if their coaches have supervision.

Supervision is so powerful; it can take the coach to a much deeper level. It can help coaches understand what is happening between themselves and their clients. The parallel processes that are everywhere can be missed between coach and client but a supervisor who sits away as the third eye can pick these areas up. Supervision can be a fascinating experience.

The depth of supervision cannot be under-estimated, and it can take the coach to a different level. Different models, tools, and techniques, but just noticing, listening, and watching the coach discuss clients brings so much more to their coaching relationships. Coaches can share their frustrations and talk about difficult situations in a confidential setting.

For me, before I became a supervisor, I was not sure what this role was and why it was required. Now I am a supervisor of executive coaches; I fully appreciate why this is so needed. For coaches, supervision can be whatever you would like it to be. The way to look at supervision is to recognise it is all about moving forward. As a professional, whatever you are qualified in, do you stop there, or do you seek to move forward? Moving forward needs the supervisor to guide and grow you. That is why coaching supervision is so necessary.

Whether internal or external coaching, it is good CPD and essential for growth. Coaching Supervision ensures standards are maintained. I think supervision is critical to maintaining these standards.

Coaching supervision can teach new tools and refresh existing tools. Coaching has risen massively over the last couple of years, and the practice of supervision raises standards across the coaching profession. However, coaching is a skilled discipline, and it is not just qualifications. Further development, self-awareness, and reflective space are essential for all professional coaches.
