Philadelphia is finally hosting an Open Streets event on September 24, nearly a year after the Pope visit that closed down roads for days and inspired residents and tourists alike to take to the streets without a car in sight.
The group Open Streets officially announced in an e-mail this morning that the event called Philly Free Streets will include nine miles of car-free streets from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
So where will you be able to meander about?
South Street, according to PlanPhilly. In particular, it will run from Front Street down to the South Street Bridge. It’ll then continue onto the Schuylkill River Trail to Martin Luther King Drive, then to the Belmont Plateau.
Activities will be all along the route, typical of all Open Streets events held internationally.
The news was somewhat quietly announced at a recent neighborhood association meeting in Bella Vista by Deputy Managing Director Clarena Tolson.
