David Hockney’s A Rake’s Progress (1961-3) is typically discussed as an updating of Hogarth. The paper will explore how far the series and associated works can be seen too as a response not just to the America that he visited in 1961 but also to the American art and literature that he encountered, which reinforced his ambition, beyond a personal process of coming out, to forge a distinctively homosexual aesthetic.
