Plumbing repairs blamed for attic fire

Light smoke is seen coming out of 7222 Montague Drive on Saturday afternoon after Amarillo firefighters extinguished an attic fire.

Amarillo firefighters put out a house fire Saturday that investigators blamed on plumbing repairs earlier in the day.

At 4:04 p.m., Amarillo Fire Department crews arrived at 7222 Montague Drive, where they saw smoke coming from the eaves and attic vents. Once inside, firefighters saw flames in a bedroom and extending into the attic.

The blaze was under control by 4:19 p.m. Authorities said fire damage, estimated at $10,000, was limited to the wall and attic space in one bedroom. Smoke damage was visible throughout the single-story home.

Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office ruled the fire accidental, blaming it on the use of an open flame by an occupant for plumbing repairs.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
