Mahwah Student Awarded National Merit Scholarship

BREAKING: Alan Xing, a student at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, received the National merit Pfizer Inc. Scholarship.

MAHWAH, NJ — An aspiring aerospace engineer at Mahwah High School has received a scholarship from Pfizer Inc.

Alan Xing, a student at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, received the National merit Pfizer Inc. Scholarship. Xing said his probable career field will be aerospace engineering.

Two other Academies students, Sarah Nathanson and Preeyanka P. Rao, both of Ridgewood, also received corporation-sponsored scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Scholarships were awarded to students who advanced to the finalist level of the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria provided by the 200 corporations. Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study.

More than 1.6 million high school juniors entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2015 Preliminary SAT. About 16,000 semifinalists were chosen for consideration for a scholarship based on their outstanding academic records, completion of an essay and other criteria.
