NEW CANAAN, Conn. (WTNH) — In light of a recent string of car robberies in the area of Ochard Drive, New Canaan police reveal tips to help car owners protect their vehicles.

Recent thefts and attempted thefts from three different unlocked vehicles have prompted the New Canaan Police Department the following tips to help prevent future car robberies.

1: Be a good neighbor and report any suspicious people or vehicles that you do not normally see to the police. It is better to report something that seems off before something happens.

2: Do not leave valuables or personal information in your car. Even if it is only for a few minutes, that’s all it take for a thief to notice and strike.

3: Never leave your keys to your house or car in a “secret” spot. Thieves know where to look for hidden keys.

4: Keep your home lit up at night. Low energy lighting that turns on and off with motion detection is a cost-effective way to keep thieves away.

5: Always lock all car doors and windows, even if you’re only stepping away for a short time.

6: Park your car in well-lit, public places. Try to avoid parking in an isolated area where there is not much traffic.

7: Always activate your car alarm system, even when you are home. Many robberies occur when car and alarm systems were not turned on.
