POST is shaping a vibrant ecosystem for Silicon Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; a network of protected lands that provide scenic beauty, clean air and water, locally grown food, and a place for people and wildlife to thrive. 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW It has been my privilege and honor to serve as Board Chair for POST this last year. As a fourth generation farmer, wine grower, equestrian and conservationist, I believe in the preservation of land for many, many reasons. 2015 was a particularly exciting year in Silicon Valley and for POST. We delivered on significant land protections, stewardship projects, and a vision for the future of the Peninsula that is unique to POST and our community of supporters. With your support, we acquired 376 new acres, facilitated the purchase or permanent protection of 442 acres by public agency partners and sold conservation easements on 8,885 acres of redwood forest, open

space and working lands. And we have cared for protected lands through seven significant stewardship projects. In my lifetime, I have watched some of the best farmland anywhere get paved over. This makes POST’s recent purchase of a 74-acre San Gregorio farm the accomplishment I am most proud to report. The project ensures the fertile soil of our land does what it does best: remain in production for the benefit of us all. It’s been a great year. Thank you for your support and I look forward to what’s to come in 2016.

A LOOK AHEAD People enjoy connecting with one another. Whether through an interesting interaction with a coworker, laughs over dinner with friends, or a hike in the woods with a loved one, these connections enrich our lives. Connections are also essential to the next phase of POSTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s land saving work. Through the years, your support has enabled us to conserve over 75,000 acres mostly in large blocks of open space. As our 40th anniversary approaches in 2017, the challenge ahead is to connect these large tracts of protected lands, which will deliver exponential benefits and enrich the lives of both two and four-legged critters. Completing regional trails like the California Coastal Trail, the Bay Area Ridge Trail, and the Skyline to the Sea corridors that connect the two, will provide spectacular recreational opportunities. Wildlife corridors that pass safely through hazardous transportation

routes like Highway 17 and the old Monterey Highway in the south bay will sustain the apex predators that are critical to the health of our natural ecosystems. In pouring over maps (as we like to do), we see that many of the essential links between the larger open spaces are working lands. For decades, coastal farmers and timber operators have used sustainable practices that demonstrate their commitment to protecting natural resources. They are key partners in long-term land stewardship, which is why POST is crafting agreements to ensure these stewards continue to care for these lands. You will hear more about how connecting spectacular open lands is vital to our conservation efforts in the months ahead. Connected we thrive!
