My name is Kerrie, this is a picture of me and my son, Kye. He was only 13 years old when he died at the hands of his own father. Now I’ve been told I can’t lay him to rest until I get permission from his dad -- the man who killed him.

The ashes of Kye have lain in a funeral parlour for over a year after he was drugged by my ex, Kevin Morton. Kevin was a prescription drug addict and jailed for manslaughter. Now he is preventing me from having any closure by refusing to sign paperwork releasing his ashes. That’s why I’ve started this campaign with The Sunday Mirror to stop this from happening.

Kye died after Kevin tricked him into taking a super-strength morphine tablet he bought from a dealer -- saying it would cure the his headache. Despite being jailed in July, a legal loophole means he shares the same rights as me over Kye’s remains.

Kevin has ruined my life. It’s sickening that he’s allowed to call the shots from behind bars. Where’s the justice? What was going through his head when he gave Kye that pill? I’d warned Kye not to touch drugs but he idolised his dad.

I blame myself every day because I didn’t realise what he was capable of. I’ll never see Kye get married or have children. All I want is somewhere peaceful where I can feel close to him. Instead I have to visit him in a funeral parlour. It breaks my heart leaving him there alone.

With the Sunday Mirror, I am calling for the unjust legal loophole - which allows killers like Kevin to dictate how their children should be laid to rest from behind bars - to be closed.

We want to ensure a parent loses access to a child’s remains if they are convicted of their murder or manslaughter.
