Comment: Chair of the IFA Pigs Committee Pat O’Flaherty said pig farmers across the EU continue to experience immense difficulty after losing export trade with Russia. Since the ban, the average EU price for pigmeat has fallen by 6% to 8% for eight consecutive weeks. Pork is at its lowest price since January 2009. In response to requests by EU farming bodies to implement emergency measures to alleviate the situation, the Commission has given a commitment to work with Russian authorities to re-open exports of pig products, which are banned due to ASF, including live pigs, fat, lard and offal.
