Located in a small village in Mahabubnagar of Telangana State, Kodangal WFPC is a collective of more than 900 women farmers. Our partner, Access Livelihood Consulting India, has been working with small and marginal farmers in the region for a number of years now and provides them professional mentoring and business services to improve the livelihoods of the community. Kodangal Producer Company was formed in 2012 with the objective of providing essential services and products such as improved variety of seeds, aggregation and marketing services and credit access to small farmers (those with upto 5 acres of land). The producer company has also recently bought 3 acres of land, close to their fields, where they will establish a godown that will help the members to store their produce and prevent distress sales.
The member- farmers cultivate Red Gram, Paddy, Cotton, Groundnut and Jowar. The region has experienced a normal monsoon this year and the women farmers now require timely credit support to purchase the fertilisers that will help the crops flourish.
The loan of Rs 10 lakhs is the second loan that Rang De is facilitating for the producer company. The amount will be utilized to make bulk purchases of fertilisers from wholesale traders. This critical intervention will ensure that the farmers do not have to rely on exploitative credit sources to purchase essential input supply and can sell their produce at optimal prices during the harvest season.
