Flood victims get help from an unlikely source, as free cars are provided by dealer

A Honda dealer has pledged to give away cars to help victims of the recent flooding in Cumbria.

In a post on its Facebook page, Kendal Honda announced that each day it is planning to donate one of its trade cars in the run up to Christmas, starting today with a 1999 Mercedes C-class.

“All of us here at Kendal Honda would like to offer our deepest sympathies to everyone in our fantastic area that has been affected by the recent storms and subsequent flooding,” the post reads.

“We have been racking our brains as to what we can do to help some of the families affected by this awful situation so close to Christmas and have decided the thing we have to hand and that lots of people may need at the moment are cars.

“So we would like to donate one of our trade cars each day to someone you know who lives in our local area and has been affected by the recent floods.”

The post goes on to say that while the cars might not be in perfect condition, all will be safe to drive and come with 12 months MoT. It is then up to the new owner to set up tax and insurance.

Kendal Honda has received a great response to the offer

The dealership, which was itself nearly flooded, reports having had a great response to the offer, with the Facebook post having reached about 150,000 people. People have also been in contact to offer to pay the vehicle tax if the new owners can’t afford to.

To apply for one of the cars, you must have been affected by the flooding, and leave your name as a comment under the Facebook post. The new owners will then be chosen at random. At present there is no set timescale on the offer, although the dealership did stress that it has a limited number of trade cars in stock.

The post ends by saying: “We hope this might give someone one less thing to think about so close to Christmas.”

One of the 500 or so comments under the post, left by Sarah Boyle, summed up the general response to the offer: “Well done Kendal Honda and all the other fantastic local businesses that had given so much help, makes you proud to be Kendalian.”
