The motif on this pen is inspired by rapids in the gorges of the Longmen Mountains of China's Yellow River Valley. A local legend has it that river carp who successfully ascend the rapids are transformed into dragons, and the expression "climbing the dragon's gate" has become a popular aphorism associated with overcoming challenges and adversity.

Taka and Togidashi Maki-e techniques are utilized to realize the motif in precious materials including gold powder and raden. The carp and water imagery continues in the special presentation box with special complimentary ink bottle, adding to this item's collectibility.
