BC AdventureSmart β€” Survive Outside Program

11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Multi-purpose space, Argyle Secondary

The Survive Outside program is a great way to learn the value of preparation for safety in outdoor activities.

AdventureSmart believes outdoor recreationalists will significantly improve their chances of survival--should they become lost or in distress--by following three easy steps: trip planning, training, and taking the essentials.

  • Trip Planning. Plan your travel route. Know the terrain and conditions. Check the weather and always fill out a trip plan.
  • Training. Obtain the knowledge and skills you need before heading out. Know and stay within your limits.
  • Taking the Essentials. Always carry these essentials, and know how to use them. Add other equipment specific to your chosen activity, season and location.

Other practical tips covered in this workshop include what to do in an emergency, and who and when to call for help.

North Shore Rescue β€” Risk Mitigation in Outdoor Adventure

12 - 1 p.m. | Multi-purpose space, Argyle Secondary

Using a real rescue call as an example, participants will see what can go wrong during a hiking trip in our local mountains and will learn what could have been done differently to prevent the mishap.

Presented by Dr. Alec Ritchie, Emergency Response physician, Lions Gate Hospital and North Shore Rescue member, this workshop will also cover how search and rescue works in BC, and interesting and informative facts about the North Shore Rescue team.
