Throwing Athlete Q & A

What constitutes a throwing athlete?

The term throwing athlete encompasses a wide range of sports and activities that don’t necessarily involve throwing but do involve your elbows and shoulders, such as:

• Baseball
• Softball
• Tennis
• Golf
• Discus, shotput, and javelin
• Swimming
• Gymnastics
• Squash and racquetball and more

What therapies are offered for throwing athletes?

Whatever the injury or concern, the rehabilitation specialists and trainers start you off with a functional movement screening to determine if you have any asymmetries or weaknesses that may be affecting your performance.

From there, they work with you on multiple levels to:

• Restore and improve range of motion
• Strengthen and condition your muscles
• Stretch your soft tissue

To do this, South Florida Rehab and Training Center offers numerous therapies and products, including:

• Strength and flexibility exercises
• Graston® technique for soft tissue mobilization
• Cupping
• Taping
• Compression
• Massage therapy
• Bracing

This list is by no means comprehensive — South Florida Rehab and Training is ideally set up to cater to all the needs of a throwing athlete.

What problems arise in throwing athletes?

Any time you put repeated stress on a joint, you’re prone to injury. Most throwing or swinging problems stem from the tendons and muscles in your wrists, elbows, and shoulders. The goal at South Florida Rehab and Training Center is to treat and prevent throwing and swinging injuries, including:

• Tennis elbow
• Rotator cuff injuries
• Carpal tunnel injuries
• Golfer’s elbow
• Little League elbow

Also, if you’ve had Tommy John surgery on your ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), the physical therapists are highly trained in helping you recover full use of your elbow.

What programs are offered to improve throwing techniques?

South Florida Rehab and Training Center is pleased to offer the Tommy House throwing program, headed up by Gabriel Carvajal, who’s the first physical therapist in southern Florida to be certified by the Tom House National Pitching Association Program.

This program focuses on strengthening baseball players’ shoulders and is ideal for amateurs and professional athletes alike. Between warm up, stretching exercises, and the throwing itself, the Tommy House throwing program helps you maximize your performance.
