In recent weeks, our collective consciousness has focused anew on the long-standing reality of police, white vigilantes, and others killing Black people with impunity. Millions of people across the United States and around the world have expressed righteous outrage at the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others. Many of us have joined these protests, praying with our feet to affirm that Black lives matter.
As United Methodists who embrace the reality of God’s presence, peace, and power in the world, we believe that attaining justice for these lives is a necessary and nonnegotiable prerequisite for true peace.
We also believe that each of us has a responsibility to address white supremacy, systemic racism, and structural inequities in our political, social, and economic systems.
Join us in calling on our elected officials to make change now.
Congress is considering legislation to reform policing practices, including establishing a national use of force standard, redefining police misconduct, banning chokeholds, banning profiling, and more.

Remember, change must happen at local as well as federal levels of government, especially when it comes to policing. After writing your members of Congress, contact your city, county, and state officials with the same message.
