RIVERTON — A Herriman High School senior is dead after a collision involving a Jordan School District bus on Bangerter Highway Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Bryson Hathaway, 17, died in the crash after the car he was in rear-ended the bus, Unified Police said on Twitter.

The bus was stopped at a traffic light near the intersection of 12600 South and Bangerter Highway at about 1:45 p.m., according to Unified Police detective Ken Hansen.

The driver of the car apparently did not realize the bus was stopped, Hansen said. There was no evidence that the driver tried to stop.

"The vehicle hit the back of the bus at a relatively high speed," he said.

Hansen estimated the car hit the bus at 50 miles per hour or more. Both the bus and the car were traveling south on the highway.

It was not clear if there were other people in the car due to the severe damage to the car, he said.

One ninth-grade girl and the bus driver were on the bus, he said. The ninth-grader had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by her parents, Hansen said. The bus driver, a man in his 40s, was not injured, according to Hansen.

Hathaway was a football player at Herriman High School. He played wide receiver and linebacker, and had 15 tackles last season for the Mustangs.

"We are devastated and heartbroken by the news of losing one of our brothers," Herriman High Football posted on Facebook.

Hansen estimated that the bus was likely to be a total loss. He said the crash was extraordinary due to the heavy damage.

"This one stands out just because of the amount of damage to that car," he said. "It’s unbelievable."

Editor's Note: Police initially said there were two students on the bus with the driver, but later said there was only one student.
