Richmond defender Noah Balta has been sentenced after pleading guilty to an assault charge stemming from an incident in Mulwala last December.

The 24-year-old was fined $3,000, placed under an 18-month community corrections order, and handed a three-month curfew from 10pm to 6am. The curfew will impact his availability for night matches, including the upcoming Anzac Eve clash.

The court heard Balta assaulted a man in a car park, repeatedly punching him in the head. CCTV footage of the incident was played during the hearing, and the victim required hospital treatment for his injuries.

As part of his sentence, Balta must abstain from alcohol, complete a behavioural change program, and is banned from returning to the Mulwala Ski Club for 18 months. He has also paid $45,000 in compensation to the victim in a civil settlement.

Speaking after the hearing, Balta said:

“I have let a lot of people down. The lesson has been learned—violence is never the answer. I’m committed to doing the work to make things right.”

Richmond Football Club acknowledged the seriousness of the matter. CEO Shane Dunne stated:

“We do not condone violence. Noah understands the gravity of his actions and the expectations that come with wearing the Richmond jumper. He has our support, but he knows trust must be earned back.”

Balta had already served a club-imposed suspension of four matches and two pre-season games earlier this year.

While the legal process has concluded, Balta’s rehabilitation is ongoing. Richmond will continue to support him through mandated programs and reintegration steps.

The club emphasized that all players are held to a high standard of conduct and that personal accountability remains non-negotiable.
