A sharp Arctic cold front sliding south will bring a sudden end to the mild spell across Ontario Friday. That combined with the wet weather expected raises concern for a flash freeze risk

Ontario's mild spell ends abruptly, threat for flash freeze

Saturday, November 28, 2015, 7:35 AM - Those who enjoyed the mid-teen daytime highs of Friday are waking up to a very different southern Ontario Saturday.

Temperatures plunged sharply through the evening to near-zero values in the wake of a sharp Arctic cold front sliding through the province from north to south. It was accompanied by showers, whose leftover moisture left lingering risk of icy roads Saturday.

"Sub-freezing temperatures for the majority of Ontario and Quebec will give the chance for some slick roads Saturday morning," Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern said.

Drivers are being urged to adjust travel plans as needed with the risk of a flash freeze and deteriorating road conditions.

The balmy temperatures of Thursday and Friday are likely the last true warmth Ontario will see for awhile, as winter gradually approaches. This weekend, high pressure from the northern plains of the U.S. will keep the skies clear, but the overnight chilly and the afternoons cool.

Looking ahead, most of southern Ontario is looking at daytime highs in the low-to-mid single digits for the coming week.

The skies won't be completely clear, however, with the next system slated to arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday. Wenckstern says the timing will determine precipitation type.

"However, it looks to be more of a rain event, with lake effect snow possible in the wake of the system east of the Great Lakes Wednesday," she says.
