Move over Jake and Elwood. With his naming at selection 12 in the 2015 Nab AFL Draft, Charlie Curnow now joins Blues brother Ed as Ikon Park’s latest double act.

Named by Carlton coach Brendon Bolton at Adelaide’s Convention Centre, the athletic Geelong Falcons tall follows a long line of Blues Brothers, from as far back as the early 1900s when the twins from nearby Parkville David and Douglas Gillespie first took to the field under Jack Worrall’s reign.

Other Blues brothers to have made an indelible impression are the Gill brothers Barry and John, the Kernahans Stephen and David and the Nicholls’ John and Don who share the club’s siblings games record of 405.

Three brothers - Jim, Dan and Mick Pender – have also chased the leather for the old dark Navy Blues, as have two sets of twins – David and Doug Gillespie and Alex and Harold Hanton.

The Gillespie boys were was born in the Royal Melbourne Zoo where their mother was employed to run the kiosk, with James having followed his twin brother David into the world in December 1887. Doug later represented his club in 90 senior matches including the 1906 and ’07 Grand Finals, and in 1910 was cleared of any impropriety in ‘The Great Bribery Scandal’.

David, a five-game player through 1907 and ’08, and a member of the local Carlton constabulary, lost his life in Caulfield’s Australian General Hospital in March 1917 as a result of war wounds sustained in Armentieres the previous July.

The early lives of the Hantons, born in May 1922, were spent apart. Alex was put into the care of a maiden aunt who maintained care of him throughout his childhood, with Harold raised by his parents.

Alex and Harold only tallied three senior games for Carlton between them, but their lives remained entwined with their beloved club until their deaths within nine days of each other at the ages of 89.
