The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first ever genetically modified salmon as safe to eat, while not requiring them to be labelled.  

While regular salmon reach market size in 32-36 months, the "AquAdvantage" salmon grows to the same size in 16 to 18 months.  The FDA has forbidden the breeding of AquaAdvantage salmon in the United States, and is only allowing the salmon to be raised in hatchery tanks in Canada and Panama.  

With the approval by the FDA, there is growing concern about the potential increased production of fish eggs at the AquaBounty facility in Souris, P.E.I.  Meanwhile, there are concerns about environmental risks, including to wild salmon.  There are also concerns about lack of transparency when it comes to potential consumers, and selling genetically modified salmon on grocery store shelves with no labels.

Health Canada has confirmed it is reviewing a submission by AquaBounty to sell genetically modified salmon in Canada.  There has been no consultation by Health Canada or the Department of Fisheries and Oceans with Canadians and Indigenous Peoples.
