For those of you have been following my dress saga; on the morning of the wedding, I happily put my dress on and in that instant I realized how insignificant what I was wearing was compared to the happiness and excitement that I felt that day. Brian and I proudly walked our son, Michael down the aisle to await his wife to be, Jonelle. The wedding party followed us, and the most adorable flower girl I have ever seen (no partiality at all), our 3 year old niece, Lilli, who completely stole the show in a dress that looked as though she might take flight at any moment. Prior to the announcement that they were ready for the wedding procession, I enjoyed watching Jonelle, the bride, act perfectly comfortable and accepting of her flower girls actions, which needless to say were not always that of cooperation. Jonelle even let Lilli try on her wedding gown while we were getting dressed. This I viewed as such an act of selfishness, and it confirmed the kind of person my son had chosen to marry on that day. The weekend was filled with family, love, and fun with the couple off to Aruba, and Brian, and I returning to Delaware with our grandchild / Bulldog, Zoey. Zoey, Calvin, and Millie have enjoyed each other’s company tremendously and entertained themselves quite nicely allowing us to complete this gift guide issue. The gift guide is now in its tenth year and just keeps getting bigger and better. We started working on the gift guide back in June carefully accepting and refusing thousands of items, and then upon receiving the items determining whether or not they are actually gift guide worthy. Each year our goal is to come up with a variety of innovative, interesting and fashion forward gifts for everyone on your list. Part of the gift guide is in this issue, with last minute gifts, stocking stuffers, and exceptional wine/ beers and spirits in the December issue of LWM. Living With A Mindset Of Acceptance And Resilience Through My Journey With TYPE 1 DIABETES Melissa Gray

No-one’s life is perfect, everyone has challenges and diabetes is just one of mine. I can’t control it or change it so I have accepted it and continued living my life.

As I enter my eleventh year with type 1 diabetes, I can joyfully say that I have lived up to these hopeful words of the young, openminded, and maybe even somewhat naïve 14-year old girl who wrote them upon entering high school. Now, as a more mature, experienced, and maybe even certifiably professional type 1 diabetic, I continue living with a mindset of acceptance and resilience through my journey with type 1 diabetes. Since we last spoke, I have navigated overcrowded hallways, survived the terrors of high school dances, and passed my driver’s ed exam. I even did relatively well on the SATs and gained acceptance into the honors program at my first choice college. And yes, as a pre-med student, I even managed to pass organic chemistry. Although somewhat triumphant, these accomplishments have not been the true highlights of my high school and college years. I have had other experiences that I hold much closer to my heart. Upon entering college, I was brave enough to inform my orientation group that I have diabetes before giving myself an insulin shot in front of them. In doing so, I met two amazing girls on my same hall who also have type 1 diabetes. We got together and started a club on our campus through the national Students With Diabetes organization. Through this organization, I was able to attend a national conference in Tampa, FL, where I met a variety of inspirational people living with diabetes. As a club we have been able to reach out to over fifty college students affected by diabetes. I am also planning a type 1 diabetes event for the local community in Harrisonburg, VA titled “Life’s Too Sweet: A workshop for a better life with type 1 diabetes.”

During the summer, I have volunteered as a counselor at Camp Setabaid at Mount Luther, where I was able to support and help care for 12-14 year olds with type 1 diabetes. I also volunteered at the University of Delaware’s Kamp for Kids, a summer camp staffed with nurses and nursing students to welcome children with type 1 diabetes. Through all of these experiences, I have become so inspired by the spirit of children living with type 1 diabetes. They are different than any other children and they hold a special place in my heart. This year at Kamp for Kids, I witnessed a 4-year-old camper giving himself an injection for the first time. I was immediately overcome with joy for him- not only joy for his accomplishment, but joy for his future. I know that with rapidly advancing diabetes technology, he will face even fewer challenges than those before him. Through every interaction with people affected by type 1 diabetes, I have become even more inspired to pursue my future career goal of becoming a pediatric endocrinologist. I have come to learn that there is a special bond shared between two people living with similar daily struggles. I hope to take advantage of the unique gift I was given to relate to children with diabetes in a way in which most doctors are unable. As I look into the future, I am excited to grow in my understanding of diabetes and its purpose in my life.

Shoulder Pain and Acupuncture

The weather is getting cooler, and winter is on its way. As the cold settles in, less outdoor activities are performed. Therefore, joint stiffness can become more noticeable. Some arthritis sufferers are able to relocate during cold months, but many people have to suffer through the winter months in pain. Medications can be expensive and have side-effects that can make winter more difficult to get through.

Shoulder pain can also be improved with acupuncture. There are different channels affected based on the location of discomfort. There is a point on the leg that is indicated for shoulder pain. Frozen shoulder is treated effectively with acupuncture, as is arthritis. Therefore, placement of acupuncture therapy will be modified based on specific complaints of the person. Each acupuncture treatment is individual and based on answers to specific questions asked by the practitioner.

Arthritis and Acupuncture Acupuncture is effective at treating all kinds of pain. Joint pain that is worse in cold, damp weather can be reduced with acupuncture. Discomfort from degenerative joints can also be treated effectively. Those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often find relief in swollen, stiff joints with Chinese medicine. In addition to treating pain from various types of arthritis, side-effects of medications can be relieved with acupuncture. Acupuncture Pain Theory In Chinese medicine, practitioners focus on the proper movement of the energy of the body, Qi, in the channels. Any pain is considered a stagnation or improper movement of Qi. Pain associated with stagnation is generally diffuse and can move around. If the stagnation continues, blood will also not move properly. With blood stagnation, sharp, pin-point pain is experienced. Often, arthritis pain is a combination of the two, Qi and blood insufficiently moving in one or more channels. Acupuncture is effective at promoting Qi and blood circulation to decrease pain and improve well-being.

Back Pain and Acupuncture Additionally, all joints of the body, including the spine, can be successfully treated for pain and discomfort. The longest channel of the body runs along the back, and those points are useful for back and neck pain. Points on the legs are effective at helping areas of the back, or as mentioned above, the shoulder. Furthermore, as discussed in previous articles, digestive problems can be helped with acupuncture. Side-effects of pain medications often include constipation. An extra benefit to acupuncture treatment for pain would be to decrease side-effects of pain medications. Studies with Acupuncture Recent studies using MRI and acupuncture have shown that the points themselves are located in specific nerve fibers that control pain perception. The exact placement of acupuncture therapy will therefore decrease pain signals traveling to the brain. This will affect the perception of pain, decreasing discomfort. Schedule an acupuncture appointment to be on your way to feeling better, with less pain!

Knee Pain and Acupuncture Knee arthritis and pain is a common complaint. Acupuncture will help to decrease discomfort in the knee by promoting proper Qi and blood flow in the joint. There are six channels that travel the leg, so acupuncture may be applied to multiple areas around the knee. Needles are generally placed in the area of discomfort as well as above and below the knee to stimulate flow along the channel or channels. 8

Top Two Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring A

Hiring the right coach can help you by producing amazing results; help you to get your life in gear or get you to the next level. One of the best reasons to hire the right coach is to close the gap from where you are to where you want to be in less time than it would take you on your own. I always say, “It is always faster and cheaper to avoid the ditches in the road, then to keep getting your car stuck in the ditches and calling for a tow truck to get you out.” The right coach will keep you on the road and avoiding the ditches, so finding that right coach is essential. Here are 5 mistakes to avoid in order for you to find the right coach. Mistake #1 - Hiring a Coach That Earns Less Than Six Figures Why does it matter how much money my coach makes? Simple, you don’t want to be the person the coach gains their experience from, you want a coach with the experience. Who would you trust to do your open-heart surgery: an established surgeon or a doctor fresh out of their residency? There is a major difference between theory and experience. It is true that all coaches at one point in time start out with just theory; this is what you find when a coach is participating in their certification process. However, the best certification processes out there include actual coaching session training early on in the process. This is integral for the coach to get the real life experience with an actual client in an actual coaching session. One of the biggest mistakes people make is they hire a coach with good intentions but little experience. A coach is more than someone who can give you advice or just listen to you about your situation. A coach is essential for helping you to identify your blind spots, to eliminate your limiting beliefs, to create a rock solid plan and deliver the accountability to stay the course. While theory can teach you the steps necessary, only experience can produce the results desired. One of the best ways to ensure that your coach has the experience that you want is to ask for referrals! Don’t be shy about this; real results from clients can make or break your decisions. Also, you may want to ask your potential coach what is his longest time working with a client? You may think that this is a negative thing if a client has been with a coach for a long period; however, this is always a good sign of a successful coach! Clients that stay in coaching are the select few top performers who have made the commitment (both financially and emotionally) to always be growing! These clients stay with their coach because they get results! Top coaches in any field are the ones who live what they teach and have the track record with clients to prove it. Would you get someone to coach you about wealth that is financially strapped? How would you feel working with a coach who only coaches in his or her spare time but

has a full time career on the side? We all know the answer. The industry standard for a successful coaching practice is a minimum of six figures of revenue. Why the six figure number? Six figures separates the dedicated professional from the start up or the part time coach. The right coach is worth every penny of your investment! Mistake #2 – Hiring a Coach That Always Makes You Feel Good This may be the biggest surprise of all to you; that’s why we saved it for the last! The most effective and results driven Coach is not here to pump you up, feed you rah-rah and unlimited motivation so that you feel good every time you leave the office. Don’t misunderstand; feeling good and motivated can be the by-product of effective coaching, however; it should not be the immediate focus. To the contrary, coaching is about growing, stepping out of your comfort zone, doing things that you have never done before so that you can have the results (and the life) that you have never had before. When doing this, there will be times when you will not feel good. Often times, that is right in the beginning, in that very first session with your Coach, as we mentioned in the above paragraphs. It is important to remember that these times are temporary and that feeling good doesn’t always mean you are doing good, just as feeling bad doesn’t always mean you are doing bad. The job of an effective Coach is to push you out of your comfort zone and teach you how to stay there (whether it feels good or bad) so that you can grow and achieve your desired outcome. During the coaching relationship, you will begin to expect the uncomfortable and stay with it rather than run form it! Being uncomfortable is a good thing and if your Coach doesn’t help you feel uncomfortable, they are not the right Coach for you! We hope this information has been helpful to you in providing key information on how to choose the right Coach. I have been reading lately about Vitamin D in dogs and cats. I have a Spitz that is 14 years old. He was recently diagnosed with kidney disease and dental issues. Would Vitamin D be helpful?

Vitamin D levels, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, is often requested in human medicine. Numerous studies have demonstrated that low levels of Vitamin D are associated with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, asthma, cancer and various infectious diseases. Humans have a number of tissues with Vitamin D receptors. Humans get most of their Vitamin D from being in the sunlight. Most people need to be exposed to the sun for less than 15 minutes a couple of times a week to reach the proper levels. This can be detrimental if a person uses sunscreen. Dogs and cats, on the other hand, can only get Vitamin D through their food, so it is imperative to choose a high quality brand of food or make sure it is available if you home cook for your pet. Studies have shown that Vitamin D varies significantly from commercial pet food manufacturers. There has been an increase in articles discussing Vitamin D in our companion animals. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that has a chemical structure similar to steroid hormones such as testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and estradiol. Fat soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin D, can build up in your body and reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is involved in calcium and phosphorus absorption, as well as, having anti-inflammatory effects. Vitamin D goes through a series of reactions involving the liver and the kidney that makes it useable to the body as a form of Vitamin D3 that is able to be utilized by the body. Foods with higher levels of Vitamin D include egg yolks, fish liver oils, and fatty fish

increased urination, increased drinking, difficulty breathing, elevated calcium, tissue mineralization, and kidney failure. It is not advisable to just start giving Vitamin D as a supplement to your dog or cat without the advice of your veterinarian. Accurate levels need to be taken to determine if your pet needs supplementation. The laboratory that runs this test has liquid drops specifically made for dogs and cats, making it a lot easier to administer by mouth. Your veterinarian will then do a physical examination and take a blood sample to be sent to a specific laboratory that evaluates Vitamin D3 levels. Results are listed as deficiency, insufficiency and sufficiency. If the levels are low (in the deficiency or insufficiency category), then a supplemental D3 liquid will be prescribed to bring levels into the adequate range. The Vitamin D3 levels should be re-checked after six weeks or so. Often times your pet will have to take this his or her entire life. Vitamin D levels should then be checked periodically particularly if your dog or cat becomes ill. Low levels of Vitamin D3 have been associated with a long list of diseases. Some of these include cancer, congestive heart failure, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, kidney disease, feline tooth resorption, hyperparathyroidism and infectious diseases. Adequate levels of D3 in the body allow better absorption of calcium and activate the killer and helper cells of the immune system. As you can see, the evidence supports the importance of checking these levels. It could very well influence your pet’s medical status now and in the future. I would highly recommend a Vitamin D level as a routine part of your pet’s health evaluation.

Toxicity can occur in humans, as well as, dogs. Signs of Vitamin D toxicity in dogs includes, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, increased urination, increased drinking, weakness, lethargy and tissue mineralization. It’s Just Another TED Talk

By the time you read this I will have delivered my first TED talk for TEDx Wilmington on October 28th. But as I write this, the experience is still in my future – my very near future. In less than two weeks I’ll be standing onstage at The Queen, sharing my perspective on what I refer to as the dark side of self-improvement with 100 of the most sparkling minds in Wilmington – and then with countless other sparkling minds around the world via YouTube. It’s truly an honor and a privilege to have been invited to participate. And it’s just a teeny bit daunting. I’ve been mesmerized by dozens of inspired – and inspiring - TED and TEDx talks. The speakers are passionate, intelligent, committed, funny and illuminating. They are also wonderfully, authentically themselves. And that, ironically is often the most difficult attribute to radiate. The very act of speaking in public triggers in many of us a fear-induced impulse to fight, flee or freeze and then, knowing those responses aren’t particularly helpful, to paste over our fear with a forced and very rigid mask of calmness. The effect is something less than authentic. It’s more along the lines of – well, forced and rigid. Not exactly the effect I want to create, or the experience I want to have. Any good speaking coach will tell you that thorough preparation and rehearsal – many, many rehearsals - are keys to delivering a powerful talk. I’m all for being prepared, and in that spirit I’ve carefully read the materials the wonderful Wilmington TEDx organizers provided to their speakers, I’ve spoken in depth with my talented friend and colleague Mary Schaefer, who gave a brilliant TEDx talk last year (Putting the Human Back in Human Resources), and I’m reading the book she suggested (Talk Like TED by Carmine Gallo). I’m also watching as many TED and TEDx videos as I can.

in supportive, empowering ways. I’m looking back on successful talks I’ve given in the past and noting what worked well for me. I’m recalling the many times I’ve been nervous about something only to experience it turning out just fine. I’m taking time to imagine and visualize how wonderful it will feel to be on that stage, sharing ideas and energy with people who genuinely want to be there. I’m reminding myself that there is no such thing as “the” talk of my life; to believe so would turn this expansive opportunity into a narrow passage which, if not navigated properly, will lead to a dead end. This talk, as important and welcome as it is in my life, is not an end in itself. It is helping me clarify my message and gain much-needed experience as a speaker. But it isn’t my last chance. Life can and will continue to bring countless opportunities to hone and share the ideas I have that I believe are worth sharing. So my real preparation for the talk is in finding ways to stay calm, centered and grounded, and to look for the joy in this experience rather than turning it into a test I will either pass or fail. I want to relish all of it, starting right now, not just the ten minutes I’ll be onstage. With that intention I bring myself to the present moment, taking the step in front of me to take as peacefully as I can. I’m writing this article with an open heart and a willingness to let the TEDx experience surprise me. Am I still nervous about it? You bet. Thankfully, Carmine Gallo assures me that most audiences expect TEDx speakers to be nervous. They’re empathetic and rooting for our success. The speakers’ nervousness is, delightfully, part of what radiates as authentic to the audience. So at least I’ve got that part down pat. That, and a deep appreciation for the opportunity to share my ideas with a broader audience, and to share my behind-the-scenes experience with you. And in this moment, that is enough.

There’s a lot of information available about how to create and deliver an impactful talk. So much, in fact, that it’s easy to be seduced to that dark side of self-improvement that I’ll be talking about on October 28th (in what I hope will be a passionate, intelligent, committed, funny, illuminating and authentic way). What I mean by that is, it’s easy to give my power away to the experts. It’s easy to get so tangled up in all of the guidelines and recommendations that “being myself” seems like an act. It’s easy to let the stories of how impactful TEDx talks have been, and how important they are, to fan the flames of my fear about ruining what is often referred to as the talk of one’s life. So I’m pausing all of the research to make room for a different kind of preparation. I’m meditating to quiet my mind. I’m talking to myself www.livingwellmagazine.net

Why are so many whales dying in the Gulf of Alaska?

Over the past several months, 33 large whales have been reported dead in the Western Gulf of Alaska, which encompasses the areas around Kodiak Island, Afognak Island, Chirikof Island, the Semidi Islands and the southern shoreline of the Alaska Peninsula. The significant die-off of whales has been declared an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), marking the first large whale UME ever in Alaska. The majority of the deceased humpback, fin and gray whales have been found moderately to severely decomposed and scientists have only been able to obtain samples thus far from one fin whale. Alaskan citizens have been instructed to call the Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network hotline immediately if a stranded or dead whale is spotted to ensure the fastest response possible by trained experts. “Large whale UMEs are the most difficult UMEs to deal with, principally because the animals are floating and rarely beached and we have a difficult time getting to the carcasses to actually examine them,” says Dr. Teri Rowles, Coordinator of the NOAA Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Program. “The most critical thing for this UME, given it is large whales, is our ability to get to the animals, document them, and if possible perform sample collections either at sea or on the beach if they are stranded. It is critical that the public and mariners report large whale mortalities or animals that they see in distress as soon as possible so that the Network can either document, access or track the carcasses.” Exposure to harmful algae blooms (HAB) is NOAA’s leading theory for the cause of the surge in whale deaths. While the organization has collected some disparate samples of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Alaska that they determined could

possibly produce biotoxins, there is no conclusive data currently associating the whale deaths to HAB, and the fin whale sample tested negative for HAB biotoxins. “Even though the one sample we tested was negative, it was not the most appropriate sample to collect and test for biotoxins. We can’t rule it out based on the results we have right now,” Rowles adds. “It’s my understanding that sea surface water and air temperatures in the Gulf of Alaska have been high, and that always concerns us because that means there’s probably a change in overall pathogen exposure—possibly HABs and other factors.” Claims that the UME is linked to the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown or the Navy-led “Northern Edge” military training exercises conducted in the Gulf of Alaska this past June have been dismissed due to lack of evidence. Muscle tissue from the fin whale sampled was sent to the University of Alaska Fairbanks for cesium analysis, and the preliminary results did not suggest any unusual exposure to manmade radiation. As the investigation continues, NOAA will be publishing updated information pertaining to the UME on their website as it becomes available; however, the investigation could take months or even years to complete. “It takes a fair amount of time to pull data together even if the event is over, and a lot of deliberation and analyses have to happen in order to determine what’s going on,” Rowles added. “It could be quite a period of time before we actually have an answer, if indeed we end up with a definitive answer for this UME.”

The single most important, most widely applicable tool for fulfilled living is gratitude. It celebrates and savors our good times. It softens and helps heal the bad times. Gratitude is a habit no one is too young or too old to cultivate. Gratitude fits into any cultural, economic, religious, political or social ideology. It has no harmful side affects. It’s free. It’s instantly accessible. Gratitude is contagious. The more I use it, the more it grows. The more it grows, the better I feel. Gratitude is a no-tech app that recognizes more and more of the good that surrounds and touches me. It keeps me healthfully humble during those glorious moments of torrential accolades. It fosters warm feelings of connection to places, things, events and other people. Universal Panacea Giving thanks is such a powerful antidote for any negative feeling I recommend using it every day. It always works. And I mean always, a word I very rarely use, but in this case always is 100% accurate. Gratitude is a universal panacea for every distressful feeling without denying or suppressing painful emotions, an unhealthy practice I too frequently engage. A Daily Habit At our family Thanksgiving table we take turns speaking of at least one thing each of us feels grateful for. Perhaps that can be a beginning of daily expressions of gratitude, which I guarantee upgrades anyone’s quality of life. I recommend making it a consistent habit. Think of as many genuine gratitudes as you can while brushing your teeth every morning. Put a reminder post-it or ribbon or rubber band on your toothbrush in order to get the habit established. Start simple with the obvious appreciation for teeth, muscular coordination, indoor plumbing, potable water, sturdy feet, ankles, knees, legs or your walker or wheel chair.

Alphabetize Gratitudes Car time can be used for gratitude time. Put a reminder visual on your steering wheel, dash or rearview mirror that catches your attention amidst the busyness of getting from here to there. I brainstorm gratitudes using the alphabet. “I’m grateful for being Able to drive. I’m grateful for the Beautiful scenery here in chateau county. I’m grateful for this safe reliable Car. I am grateful for Dazzling sunshine flooding the landscape.” Or use categories such as naming all the people you’re grateful to have in your life. Another category might be the cars you’ve enjoyed owning. How about everything you appreciate about your home? Your health? Your last vacation? Your pet(s)? Your neighborhood? Work? Friends? Family? Hobbies? Nature? Cumulative Effects Gratitude softens my heart and strengthens my power. Its effects are cumulative. The more I use it the more it helps. Decades ago, from my concealed angry inner life, I could barely splutter thoughts of gratefulness because most of what I felt was the legions of dismal disappointment and loneliness that filled my awareness as I conducted my superlative life of service. It seemed such an absurdity, so irrelevant, to spend energy on reciting gratitudes. Yet, in spite of the anger overlaying my initial efforts, gratitude has indeed worked its miracles in my life. No one is exempt from gratitude’s benefits. No one. Simple, Yet Powerful Why does such a simple thought process heal so powerfully? One reason is that, no matter how lamely or reluctantly or resentfully, focusing on gratitude changes the channel to a better neurological program. Change your thinking change your life is a truth. Thoughts influence the production of bodily chemicals, which constitute our cellular environment. Love chemicals displace stress chemicals and everything runs easier and better.

Appreciate What’s Positive Are you feeling distress around a friend or loved one? Whatever the predominating negative emotion, and however great the magnitude of that emotion may be begin thinking through an alphabet of gratitudes. Nothing is too inconsequential or too superficial to qualify as a focal point for appreciation. There is only one rule. Refrain from expressing gratitude for what the person is not or for what they do not do. Start Physical Here’s a real example using a little shadow humor. A relative always interrupts any description of distress I’m sharing by abruptly declaring some insensitive broad statement such as “That was a dumb thing to do” or “You should have known better!” I feel like I’m being harshly scolded. I would not formulate a gratitude that “at least this relative is using only verbal abuse and not a lethal weapon.” My genuine gratitude may start with purely physical attributes like, “beautiful blue eyes” and “lovely teeth” moving to “ingenious computer skills” and “talented grill chef.” A few more gratitudes and the sting of a moment’s phone conversation fades as I intend to direct my future sharing with this relative into subject matter that feels safer for me.

Children Karen Jessee

A

friend bemoaning his weight gain commented, “You have children, these little characters that cry and eat and poop. And then they become verbal, and then they become verbally abusive, and then they grow just tall enough to smack you where it hurts. Sometimes it takes beer and Oreos to remind yourself that these are the greatest little things in your life.” Fact: children mean changes in the home. The stuffed fish on the kitchen counter has nothing to do with dinner; scenes from Jurassic Park are set up throughout the house; tiny game pieces have you experiencing the pain of childbirth through your bare feet; the amount of paper stuck to the refrigerator far surpasses the amount of food inside of it; you haven’t parked your car in the garage for years. In homes where children and clutter rule, mothers bemoan the feeling that they have donated their once lovely abodes to their little darlings. Chaos reigns; there are too many toys and clothes to put away; too many papers and crafts to display The Problem: “Too many.” A child’s room has no room because there are “too many” toys; closets contain unopened Christmas and birthday presents because there were “too many” to open and the child was overwhelmed. Rooms are destroyed by mounds of laundry because the children have “too many” clothes, most of which no longer fit but are part of the confused piles anyway. Kitchens and offices are ruled by “too many” school papers and art projects. 16

It takes a special effort and eye to maintain any kind of sanity within the home once children are part of it. Here are some insights from other moms: Purge: It’s not a bad idea to do an annual clean out before the holidays. You know that more is going to come in. Any time when the kids are home and can be a part of this decision making has two advantages: they’re learning some valuable lessons about downsizing themselves and you’re getting back some real estate. If toys and books are in good shape or new, there are solutions beyond the usual charities. One friend looks through toys that are new and yet unopened and immediately puts them in the “Toys for Tots” Christmas collections. Another gathers up the donatable items and shares them with various day care centers. While not all children are good with letting go, the promise of making room for new things coming in for birthdays and the holidays is a good incentive. Boundaries and Storage: It’s always good to have attractive pieces of furniture that double as storage… and a few strategies. One friend who had two boys had a house that showed no signs of children. She limited how many things were allowed to travel into her living room, dining room and kitchen and she had hassocks and a coffee table that all held toys. It was a major rule that everything was put away before dinner was served. She also had a corner where children’s things could be stored, and when company came, she pulled out an attractive screen that hid everything. — continued on next page

Another had bookshelves where she had labeled bins for the toys. At the end of the evening, she pulled out one bin at a time and stipulated which of the toys went into which bin. Ten minutes and she had taken back her living room.

Choosing our Words Children give personalities to their toys and stuffed animals so asking them to “put them away” might be akin to making those things suddenly lifeless. Maybe suggesting that they give those toys “a chance to rest” is a phrase that empathizes with the child’s imagination. It keeps the toys alive for the children but out of the way for you.

This is no different than asking clients if they could “let someone else love this.” The phrase allows us all to believe that the item will take on a new life in someone else’s hands. Seasonal Joy: I bring up the subjects of children, storage and “too much,” because the holiday colors, sounds, and fragrances are upon us. It is that wonderful time of the year when we delight in buying, wrapping and giving. We can’t help ourselves. But time spent taking inventory of our lives and our stuff, our collections of “too much” throughout the year, during commercials, during a summer, whenever we can snatch those moments to focus on a closet at a time, will make a big difference down the road, both for the house…and for the children.

After a three day intensive at your facility, I feel Great! I am not completely sure all of the names of the modalities you performed, but Wow! I havent felt this good in years! I know you mention lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, Watsu Therapy in the pool, pelvic straightening on a horse and revamping my diet. But the transformation happen so fast. Btw I am retiring my coat and tie and heading off to my first Yoga Retreat. How did you know where to start?

A:

I always tell my patients to forget the labels and all the medical jargon and feel the symptoms as they are expressing in their body, leave processing the medical information up to me and when the symptoms are gone will it really matter whether someone nailed the diagnosis? When you are a caregiver of any type, the first thing you must do is water, feed, rest, and repair yourself so there is no resentment in your caring for an other. As you notice in the intensive and for my first patients of the day, I might prepare a specific drink or tea for them and do it in front of them or with their participation and share. I am creating for you an experience of healing that begins before you enter the treatment space. Preparation. There is a process of grounding and meditation that I do to allow information to flow through me about you. Clearing a way for the information your body is expressing to be able to be received through my fascia. Information comes when I touch you, I see the landscape of your body, I hear what you saying about yourself, your life, your dreams. I feel your breath, your skin texture and integrate this with the clinical information and my evaluation findings. Some patients come to you like a dart and some come like a paint ball. Darts are clear cut. Problems are more orthopedic, less neurological or emotional overlay. No real history. This is too loose, how do I make it tight? This is too tight help me loosen.

and quiet and methodical. Addressing each issue as it comes up in treatment in the order it presents itself. Quieting the craniosacral system and aligning it well allows lymph to flow, restoring proper breathing and correct posture are first in priority. The psoas muscles, respiratory diaphragm, pectoral and suboccipital muscles must be released so the patient can experience using the correct postural muscles to stand up straight. Having access to the right muscles because opposing tight muscles are lengthened strengthens the overstretched weakened postural muscles. Before exercise can be effective this imbalance must be corrected. Balancing the pelvis and adjusting the C1-2 will put the head, eyes and brain in proper position. It is a global approach that allows for a decrease in the noise of the body, decreased distraction. The focus of treatment and what the patient/therapist team needs to address becomes more clear after the big diffuse symptoms are handled. A key lesion will then surface. A red flag is thrown by the body when it is off. If no one catches that clue, the body will throw more. Identifying where symptoms start and how they impact the rest of the body is how we get the yarn back in order, the systems working at full capacity. Some times the trail is obvious by the story the patient tells however more often than not the story can be misleading and distracting. Sometimes the obvious is too simple, some times we think it should be complicated. Following the body and not the words are most helpful. When the dust settles through the initial phase of treatment, teachings surface on cellular health, stress relief, spiritual awakening, muscle lengthening and strengthening, prevention of reinjury, nutritional, homeopathic consults as the client requests either through questions or evident through the body presentation. This aspect of treatment is very much a team work type process. I stay open to the patients signals, the patient stays open to learning more about their body. There is a divine way that the information flows and healing happens when the therapist and patient have a good relationship and foundation based on experience. I use experiential learning especially where the body is concerned and all the tools nature has to offer. The patient really dictates the order and flow if the therapist is listening with all senses.

Ask the Sex Therapist! More Dating Don’ts

As the resident sex therapist for Living Well Magazine (in my head, not in reality), I feel compelled to help readers as best I can, whenever they reach out to me. After receiving several questions from LWM readers in response to my article “Missteps on the Path to Finding Love” (LWM September 2015) Primarily, readers wrote to me asking for more dating advice about ‘what not to do.’ Email after email, readers shared their experiences and asked my advice. A pattern emerged: I was being asked very similar questions, despite the differences of the individual’s specific experiences and demographics (age, sex, etc.). Below are two of the more common questions, followed by my list of general “dating don’ts.”

Q:

I’m newly divorced after being married for almost 20 years. I’ve bought several books about dating and I’ve worked on sticking to “the rules.” I have gone on a few dates, but everything is so different now. Do you have dating suggestions for someone who’s been out of the game for so long?

A:

The fact that you’re trying to learn and you’ve had the courage to put yourself out there is a very good start! The first piece of advice I have: Don’t think of dating as a game. Yes, I know that many of the books on dating have “rules” and “tricks” to help you “get the one you want.” There’s a reason why pick-up artists aren’t called relationship artists, and it’s because they’ve only mastered the art of seduction. Seduction only gets someone so far (and it usually ends in the bedroom). The tips and tricks that people use are nothing more than manipulation games. It’s 44

all an illusion and eventually the other person will see through it. If you’re looking for a serious relationship, don’t date like it’s a game. Be the most authentic version of yourself that you can be. After all, that’s the person that they’re going to end up with if they want to be in a long-term relationship. In my opinion, it’s better to just be yourself and find someone who genuinely likes you for who you are, rather than pretending to be someone you’re not, and lose them later because you’re not who they thought you were.

Q:

I’m not into bars or clubs and I can’t stand dating websites. I feel like if I’m just patient, eventually I’ll find ‘the one.’ I’ve been single for a little over three years and I’m tired of spending Saturday nights alone. Do you have any advice?

A:

While I admire your patience, I caution you to reflect on the difference between “patience” and “waiting.” When one is being patient, they have put forth effort for something to come to fruition, and now they are calmly awaiting the results. When one is waiting, they are passively putting their life in the hands of some kind of other (e.g., fate, God, the Universe, etc.). They’re waiting for life to produce a result, when they have not actively participated in the steps necessary for its creation. If you’re waiting for “the one” to just fall into your lap, don’t. Outside of romantic comedies and romance novels, this rarely ever happens in real life. What are you doing to actively meet someone? My advice is this: Do things you enjoy, even if you have to do them alone. Find new and interesting hobbies, outside of your home. Challenge

yourself to try something new, go to new places, or try to learn something new. Bottom line: You must be an active participant in your own life. Put effort into engaging in activities where you’ll be meeting new people, while being patient along the way. General Dating Don’ts Don’t ignore “red flags.” Follow your intuition and pay attention to your gut feelings. If something feels “off ” there is generally a reason and it’s usually not good. Don’t “act like you don’t care.” Being aloof is not the same as being confident. Confidence is attractive. Being cocky, distant, or standoffish is not attractive. Don’t date someone because you can see their “potential.” See them for who they are right now. If that isn’t someone you want to be with, be honest with yourself (and them). Don’t monopolize the conversation. Ask them questions to learn more about their history and life experiences. Listen to them; don’t just wait to respond.

Don’t hurt the person in front of you because you’re still carrying pain from a previous relationship. Don’t feed your fears. Fear of rejection, fear of abandonment, fear of getting hurt…getting stuck in these fears becomes a selffulfilling prophecy. Don’t convince yourself that “if you can get someone this great, there might be someone even better out there.” As long as you’re not “settling” for less than you want and need, be grateful that you found someone so great! Don’t believe that you only have one “type.” Explore the possibility that amazing people come in all shapes, sizes, and/or skin tones. Don’t give yourself to someone who doesn’t deserve you. Don’t make someone a priority, if all you are to them is an option (quote by Maya Angelou). Last, but certainly not least…

Don’t try to fix them…or heal them. Refer them to a good therapist, and move on. If it’s meant to be, they’ll get back in touch with you when they’ve done the work to be a healthier person.

Don’t limit yourself with the belief that there’s only one person on the planet (i.e., a soulmate) that can make you happy. Oh wait, there is only one person that can make you happy…it’s YOU!

Don’t make excuses for poor behavior. Pay attention to how they behave and listen to their words. They’re likely telling you everything you need to know.

Don’t respond to texts, emails, etc., while on a date. Put down your phone and give the person your undivided attention. Don’t analyze every word in a text message in an effort to divine a deeper meaning. Don’t stalk the person via social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.). Don’t stalk their “exes” via social media (see above examples). Don’t just cut off all communication if you’re no longer interested (a.k.a., ghosting). Be an adult and end it verbally; or at the very least in an email (NOT a text). Don’t hold on to past mistakes. Learn from them and move on.

Unlocking the Secrets of the “Frozen Shoulder Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal Don’t you just love to watch a great rivalry between epic foes? The Yankees vs. the Red Sox, Superman vs. Lex Luther, Rocky vs. Apollo Creed? Many of us can relate to battling a nemesis, that one opponent who pushes us to our very limits. I must admit, in my 22 years of chiropractic practice, I’ve had a few. I would like to introduce you to a true adversary that has caused me to stretch my abilities beyond almost all others. I am referring to the villainous frozen shoulder!

flung open. The elusive prize that I sought was finally revealed and she lifted her arm straight up towards the ceiling. There was no restriction and the tension was absent.

Frozen shoulder is commonly thought to be caused by inflammation in the shoulder joint. It is characterized by loss of range of motion, stiffness and pain. Medical treatment often involves nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), steroid injections and/ or physical therapy. Although these approaches can produce results, for many they do not. I tend to meet those interested in a natural approach without the use of drugs or those who failed to gain results from the above treatments. Throughout the years I have had varied success with frozen shoulder. Many patients improved, but others left me bewildered, frustrated and intrigued. Always thinking of the underlying cause, it became apparent that this mysterious condition was like a safe that could only be cracked after revealing its full combination. I felt like I had only 4 of the 5 digits and was tired of being bested by this common malady with its secret secure inside! Early this fall a women came into the office complaining of her shoulder. Hers was a typical case that I have seen before many times. She explained that she did not do anything that she knows could have caused it and that it started months earlier. She was unable to lift her arm past 90 degrees and when she tried it was very painful. The difficulty and pain brought on from getting dressed, doing her hair, and performing other daily activities caused her great concern. After treatment with the normal array of techniques that I use, she had gained only about 15 degrees of flexibility. It was more improvement than she’d experienced to date, but I felt stuck again knowing the secret of her frozen shoulder remained locked in the proverbial safe. On the fifth visit I tried adding a soft tissue technique to a seemingly unrelated part of her body. After applying it for about 15 seconds, it was as if I heard the final click of the internal gears. The safe door 46

Was this the new breakthrough for frozen should that I’d been seeking for years? Was this the full combination? Thankfully, it was for this patient and three of the four who immediately followed. The one shoulder that did not improve belonged to a man who had a previous shoulder surgery for a separate issue. Although necessary, the surgery left him with a permanent loss of mobility. After some refinement, I found that the best results come from applying four different techniques. Each is very important and necessary for the shoulder to unlock. Below is the full combination: Biostensegrity Restoration Technique This method addresses and corrects muscular weaknesses. Just like when you overwhelm and blow a circuit in your house with too many appliances, you can overwhelm the nerve that controls a muscle. In this case, the function of the nerve feeding the muscles does not fully switch off, but appears diminished. The muscle is left stuck in a weakened state. Joint instability and dysfunction ensues. When left with one or several weak muscles, the shoulder joint loses its proper mechanics. Compensating muscles over-contract and inflammation develops. With the use of a special type of laser therapy, the weakness is painlessly corrected. Misalignment of these bones can cause interference to the nerve fibers. The lower half of your neck contains the wiring harness of nerves that feed and control the shoulders and the rest of the upper extremity to the finger tips. Interestingly, I have found that proper hip bone alignment is also essential for normal shoulder mechanics to exist—it really is all attached! Chiropractic Extremity Adjusting Again, gentle adjustments are used. The focus is on the joints of the shoulder and shoulder blades. Please do not confuse this with manipulation under anesthesia which is an invasive procedure used in medicine to tear adhesions while the patient is under moderate to deep IV sedation. I use an instrument that applies gentle pressures to the bones of the shoulder. Although receiving chiropractic adjustments tends to be relaxing, my patients are all awake.

body is one giant interconnected functional unit. A frozen shoulder can be a complex and difficult condition to overcome. Improvement often requires a unique combination of techniques, multiple visits and some time. I have found that most people will respond to some degree in just the first visit. This is helpful, because if I find that a shoulder remains unchanged, it is revealed early on and the commitment to finding out is minimized. Although I still have much respect for this notable foe, I believe this new approach will allow patients to see more triumphs than ever before!

Soft Tissue Percussion With the use of a percussion instrument, tensions in the muscles and torsions in the fascia (connective tissue) are released. The procedure feels a bit like a vibrating massager, but more powerful. Administering it is comfortable for the patient, easy to use, and takes only seconds. The real trick is in finding the exact points and vectors of correction. I have used this technique for the shoulder over the years. This step was the final part of the combination that eluded me, but not when used in the shoulder region. Soft tissue tension and torsion needed to be released in the patient’s pelvic areas in order for the safe to finally open. The most common spots were around the junction of the hip bone and tailbone (called the sacroiliac joint) and above the crest of the hip where your belt sits. Again, it’s really all attached and the

1 pound sweet potato, cubed (4 cups)

In the colder months, take a break from your usual mashed potatoes or yams and try this sweet and savory treat. Wild rice has a deep flavor that has given it a gourmet reputation, in spite of the healthfulness of the grain. If you can find true hand-harvested wild rice from the Great Lakes region, you absolutely must splurge and show off your acquisition in this delicious salad.

1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, chopped

Serves 6 (makes about 7 cups)

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

3 cups water

1/2 cup walnut pieces, coarsely chopped

4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 large scallions, chopped (white and green parts) 2 medium ripe pears, cored and chopped 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons Grade B maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup wild rice or a rice blend

Add the water to a 2-quart pot and bring to a boil. Add the rice and return to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cover the pot. For hand-harvested wild rice, start checking in 20 minutes. Cultivated rice may take 45 minutes to 1 hour. When the rice is tender and just starting to split apart at the ends, drain well. Let cool. Preheat the oven to 400°F. On a large sheet pan, toss the sweet potatoes with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Roast for 20 minutes, stir, and then roast for 10 minutes more, depending on the size of your cubes. www.livingwellmagazine.net

When the cubes are easily pierced with a paring knife, they are done. Let cool to room temperature. In a large bowl, combine the wild rice, sweet potatoes, parsley, scallions, and pears. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining olive oil, lemon juice, maple syrup, salt, and pepper. Pour the dressing over the wild rice mixture and toss to coat. Serve topped with walnuts. Keeps for 2 to 3 days, tightly covered, in the refrigerator. If you want to store it longer, wait to chop the pears until just before serving.


Whole Grain Mac and Cheese with Peas Go ahead, serve your family these crunchy, crumb-topped creamy noodles and watch them dig in. You don’t have to tell them that there are hidden sweet potatoes and onions puréed into the cheesy sauce, adding to the vegetable content of the meal, or that the macaroni is made from healthy whole grain. Why say anything? Just listen to the happy sounds of people enjoying a cheesy mac. Serves 6 (makes 8 cups) 1 tablespoon canola oil, plus more for the pan 2 cups (8 ounces) chopped sweet potato 1 cup chopped onion 2 cups milk 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 8 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded (3 cups), divided 4 ounces Gruyère, shredded (1 1/2 cups), divided 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar 12 ounces whole wheat macaroni 1 cup frozen peas 2 slices whole wheat bread (11/2 cups breadcrumbs) 2 teaspoons unsalted butter or olive oil www.livingwellmagazine.net

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly oil a 2-quart baking dish. Put on a large pot of salted water to boil for the macaroni. In a large sauté pan, heat the canola oil over medium heat and sauté the sweet potatoes and onion. Turn the heat to low and cover the pan, cooking for about 5 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are very soft when pierced with a paring knife. Transfer the sweet potatoes and onion to a food processor and purée until smooth, scraping down as necessary. Pour the milk into the sauté pan and warm it over medium heat just until hot to the touch (don’t boil). Transfer the hot milk to the processor and add the nutmeg, salt, 2 cups of the Cheddar, 1/2 cup of the Gruyère, and the cider vinegar. Process until smooth. The cheese should melt from being mixed with the hot milk and vegetables. Cook the macaroni for 2 minutes less than the package instructs (it should be a little underdone). Put the peas in the colander and drain the hot macaroni over the peas. Shake the colander to dry the pasta and peas. Transfer into the prepared 2-quart baking dish and pour the cheese sauce over, stirring to mix. Make the breadcrumbs by tearing the bread into coarse pieces, then pulsing into large crumbs in the food processor. In a medium bowl, combine the remaining cheeses, breadcrumbs, and butter or oil. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the macaroni. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until bubbly and browned on top. Once cooled, keeps for 1 week, tightly covered, in the refrigerator.

Cranberry Cornmeal Upside-Down Cake Cranberries make a bright topping for this luscious cake, which is perfect for a fall dessert or a change from the usual pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Sweet, toothsome cornmeal makes the cake sturdy enough to stand up to the tangy, buttery berry topping, with delicious results. Serves 10 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 2 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup medium-grind cornmeal 3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons freshly grated orange zest 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup canola oil 1 large egg 3/4 cup plain yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Wrap an 11-inch round springform pan with foil so that if any butter leaks out, it won’t burn in the oven. Put the butter in the pan and place the pan in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes as the oven heats up. Remove from the oven and tilt the pan to cover evenly with melted butter. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly in the pan and distribute the cranberries evenly over that. Reserve. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, granulated sugar, zest, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together the canola oil, egg, yogurt, and vanilla. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until well combined. Scrape the batter evenly over the cranberries in the pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out with moist crumbs but no raw batter on it. Cool for 5 minutes in the pan on a rack. Place a plate over the cake, and holding them together firmly, flip to invert the cake onto the plate. If any topping stays in the pan, quickly pick it out with a butter knife and fill it in any gaps on the cake. Let cool completely before serving. Keeps for 1 week, tightly covered, in the refrigerator. www.livingwellmagazine.net
