This year on April 22, more than 1 billion people across the globe will participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world, with this year's theme of Environmental & Climate Literacy. At SAP, we have our own initiatives to help the world run better and improve people’s lives.
Since 2013, SAP America has partnered with Triskeles and their Food For All program, running a charitable garden onsite at the office in Newtown Square, PA. SAP employees build community while learning about organic gardening and providing fresh, healthy produce to local food pantries. There are a number of environmental benefits for sustainability, in addition to physical and mental rewards for the gardeners themselves.
The SAP Giving Garden is made up of 22 - 4x12 foot cypress beds, and a total area of 55x105 feet. It was constructed by SAP volunteers with the guidance of Triskeles. Jim Dodd, Facilities Supervisor at SAP NSQ, sponsors the garden while David Brennfleck and Brandy Melewsky from Digital Business Services are the coordinators working with a team of several volunteers for the upkeep.
Over the past few years, we have provided more than 8,000 pounds of organic vegetables to people in need. It has not gone unnoticed as SAP America was recently named on People Magazine’s Top Companies That Care 2017 list, highlighting 50 companies “caring for their communities, their employees, and the world.”
Vegetables donated each year to local food banks (in pounds):
This past Wednesday, a group of volunteers gathered together for the first spring planting of 2017. The produce this time includes beets, cabbage, cucumbers, kohlrabi, lettuces, radicchio, and more. Two more plantings will take place before summer and the fall, and plenty of work to do in between.
