With the company’s publishing arm currently undergoing a line-wide relaunch, Marvel Entertainment has unveiled a series of YouTube videos intended to bring newcomers up to speed with the four-color origins of the Avengers, Iron Man and other characters, titled Marvel 101.
The series launches today with 20 shorts centering on the current conditions of the comic book versions of characters familiar to audiences who only know Marvel figures from movies and television; indeed, of the initial 20 characters showcased, only one — Ms. Marvel — isn’t currently appearing in, or in development to appear in, a movie, TV series or animated series.
The full list of characters appearing in the launch videos includes Ant-Man, Avengers, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America — Steve Rogers, Captain America — Sam Wilson, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk, Iron Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, Nova, S.H.I.E.L.D., Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man and Thor. (Watch examples below.)
Notably absent are characters and concepts that Marvel doesn’t have movie or TV rights to, including anything relating to the Fantastic Four — a team also absent from Marvel’s All-New, All-Different publishing relaunch — and the X-Men. Perhaps they’ll show up in future weeks, with new episodes set to debut every Tuesday.
