Oxford snubs calls to return donation from oligarch’s son Said Gutseriev

Oxford University has been urged to return a £2.6 million donation it received from the son of a sanctioned Russian oligarch.

Said Gutseriev, 34, donated the sum months after he had received shares believed to be worth millions of pounds from his father, Mikhail Gutseriev, an oil tycoon sanctioned by Britain over his close relationship with Belarus’s dictator.

The donation to the university’s department of anthropology and archaeology was announced in May 2019. There is no allegation of wrongdoing by Said Gutseriev, who holds British citizenship and has not been sanctioned by western governments.
