The state’s campus carry law is coming to Central Texas on Monday, 21 days before students return for fall semester classes.
Students shouldn’t see much change, as all firearms will need to remain concealed; however, they will see new signage for the Texas A&M University-Central Texas gun-free zones.
The campus carry law goes into effect on Aug. 1 for public four-year universities including A&M-Central Texas.
No guns are allowed at Central Texas College, a two-year school, until Aug. 1, 2017.
The law was passed in 2015 by the Texas Legislature and will allow Concealed Handgun License holders to concealed carry their handguns anywhere on campus grounds with the exception of gun-free zones as listed by individual university policies.
Texas A&M University-Central Texas’ compliance with Senate Bill 11 includes only one area: the Counseling Center and the co-located Community Counseling and Family Therapy Center inside of Warrior Hall. This location will be indicated as a gun-free zone with signage that meets the law’s requirements.
According to interim communications director Jill Cloud , the university has received no last-minute questions or concerns from students.
