Who’s getting ranked?
For the ninth year in a row, Canadafootballchat.com (CFC) is pleased to bring you the national high school football rankings known as theĀ CFC50.
The CFC50 rankings considers all conference and non-conference games (in Canada and the United States) while scrimmages are not evaluated (there is no such thing as an exhibition game – those are classified as non-conference games) and forfeit* wins are not considered towards overall record.
How is the CFC50 evaluated?
Leagues included in rankings: British Columbia AAA Varsity, Alberta Tier One, Saskatchewan 12-man 4A, Manitoba AAA Varsity, Ontario OFSAA Bowl AAA qualified teams, Quebec Juvenile Division 1, New Brunswick 12-man, Nova Scotia Tier 1.
The CFC50 is a RELATIVE RANKING that considers top tier leagues from all eight high school playing provinces (minimum one team represented from each province) and the strength of the league that they play in. Additional criteria used to determine the relative ranking are the ability to accomplish winning a championship, the impact players and performers on that team (ie. CFC100s, CDN All-Stars etc.), and a team’s coaching and recent tradition.
The CFC Scouting Bureau consists of CFC Reporters, CFC Scouts, and selected local reporters and scouts who submit local ranking results on a weekly basis.Ā The CFC50 is released every Monday (other than on Holidays) at 12 noon.
No. 1 St. Thomas More Knights – Holding the number 1 spot can be tough, and some would even see it as a curse. However, we think the Knights have just enough ‘tude and talent to keep this ball rolling throughout the season. It will take a monumental upset to unseat the Knights this year. Who’s up for the challenge?

No. 2 Harry Ainlay Titans (1-0) – With a non-conference beat down on the Leboldus Golden Suns this past weekend of 44-9, the Titans aren’t skipping a beat after their 2017 provincial championship run. With a slew of talent on their roster this year, we don’t see the Titans leaving the top 5 anytime soon.
No. 3 SĆ©minaire Saint-FranƧois Blizzard – The Blizzard get a bye to start their season. They will be without two of their more dynamic players this year, but don’t read into that too much as the Blizzard will still freeze anyone in their tracks, mark our words. They open up their season against Triolet on the 7th.
No. 4 St. Francis Browns – After their loss to Harry Ainlay last season, we hope that they all got locked in a weight room and film room this offseason in order to take back what, they believe, is their true spot in Alberta. We feel that Alberta is the province to watch this season…it’s electric!
No. 5 Holy Names Knights – After their stunning – and yes stunning is the word – upset of London South in the OFSAA Bowl last season, Holy Names is no doubt going to come out strong and maintain that momentum that they finished with last season.
No. 6 St. Paul’s Crusaders – The Crusaders open their regular season this Wednesday against the Dakota Lancers. Dakota made a few appearances on the rankings last season and it sounds like they have been putting in the time to make a longer stay this year. But what a way to open your season – against the 2017 provincial champs no doubt.

No. 7 New Westminster Hyacks (0-1) – The Hyacks opened their season with non-conference play against the Liberty Patriots in Seattle, WA. LHS is ranked 35th in the state and 2545 nationally by MaxPreps – nothing like taking it easy your first game back. The final score of that game was 28-12 in favour of the Patriots. The Hyacks get to work out the kinks this week as they prepare to start their regular season game against the Carson Graham Eagles on Friday night.
No. 8 London South Lions – With a heartbreaker loss last season in the OFSAA Bowl against Holy Names, the Lions will be roaring all season, we feel. Nothing like a big defeat to make you hungry for the next season. With CFC100 quarterback, Ethan Martin, coming back to play for South (decommitted from Guelph), it will be interesting if they can finish what they started.
No. 9 Campbell Tartans – The Tartans get to work on the 6th against O’Neill in Saskatchewan. O’Neill finished 0-8 last season. The Tartans should come away with the win in this one.
No. 10Ā Catholic Central Crusaders – Another one of the strong teams in the London, Ontario region, they won’t start their 2018 campaign until the 7th in non-conference play down south againstĀ Divine Child high school in Michigan. They will field another solid football team and will look regain their bragging rights in London this season.Ā
